My old man used to bring me here on our way to LSU football games. Was always a good stopping place on the way. Not sure if anyone else has nostalgic memories there. It’s a shame it closed down; I still always think about it when I drive through Livonia.

Ate there many times. It was a great place to stop for a meal. Loved the atmosphere and the food. It wasn't anything outstanding, but solid. It went down some when the owners sold it. I can't recall how long it stayed in business after it was sold.

I remember one particular evening after either an afternoon or morning game, “Blondie” & I stopped by to eat dinner on way home. I ordered the Speckled Trout Amandine, when I was finishing up, waitress brought me another order, said the chef thought the filets were a little small, so cooked 2 more for me. I was a fan for life!

We usually tried to time it to have lunch there driving home from NO or BR. Sometimes ran into folks from Shreveport that we knew.

One time there were some Harley folks eating, and one guy ordered rack of lamb. He asked the waitress, "What's this green stuff?" She answered, "Mint jelly," to which he asked, "What do you do with it?", to which she replied, "You eat it."

I think about that every time I have lamb or JDR is mentioned.

I always liked the food but I was young and had different standards. I thought the decor was especially noteworthy. Some things i remember were the big taxidermied Alligator, the photo they had with Oprah when she visited and I think some others with a president, lots of old news clippings framed. That old restaurant decor isn’t something you find much of nowadays.

I think they had old pharmacy glass bottles on some shelves.

They did. Relatives of my husband’s were the original restaurant owners, purchasing the store from the Dreyfus family. My in-laws helped with the remodel and there were all kinds of cool vintage things left from the stores inventory that they used to decorate. I have a square of the paper the store used to wrap customers’ purchases framed in my kitchen.

One of my favorite things was their personal collection of framed old Cream of Wheat advertisements. A couple of dozen down one wall. Very unique.

It was a great restaurant. Spent many special occasions there. I miss it very much.

I do not know. Joe and Diane retired years ago. I think it went through a couple of owners and may be closed now. I never had cause to return after they sold.

So many great memories there as a kid. We stayed at their B&B a couple times as well.

One of the best restaurants of Greater BR in the past 40 years. When it was humming (late 80s-early 90s), it was better than any place in BR proper.

That was a great place. It was our default for many years for Mother’s and Father’s Day.

I don’t recall that on the original menu. Maybe a later chef did those.

I recall reading an article in the Advocate or other local paper, many years ago, about how Alexandria attorney Mike Small and some friends/family drove down every weekend to eat at JDR. It was definitely a cultural icon in its era.
