Your comparison wasn't a good one

sure it is. when someone states that a restaurant charging $30 for a plate of crawfish etouffee disqualifies that restaurant, then the same premise must hold true for any other. In this case I presented to you exibit A, Commander's Palace. They charge $31 for a plate of crawfish ettoufet, so, by the premise which has been established, that means CP is now disqualified.

In no way was I speaking ill of CP or even comparing it to JI; they are two completely different establishments. I was strictly displaying the lunacy of such a stupid statement. And by the way, JI does not charge $30 for a plate of crawfish ettoufet. It is $25.99. Still a ridiculously high price for that dish, but the facts must be presented accurately.

$26.95 with tax comes out to be a few coins under $30. Either way, that's ridiculous

Yep, I figured to that this is how this thread would go. Another in the list of sacred cows that aren't allowed to be talked down about or the anti snob crowd gets fired up.
Same with threads about Abita beer.

Go and enjoy. Report back. We are all allowed to have different opinions. I think.

To be honest, their high prices most likely help their business

Of course. I personally dont think it is that great food wise. I only went once and never went back. But to state "it isnt worthy of the crowds " and "overrated" just reeks of the food board

I submit there is nothing unique about the food

where else can you get venison, rabbit and deep fried poboys all on one menu? that's unique in and of itself. if you don't enjoy the food, that's one thing, but calling it not unique is disingenuous.

The poster who stated it's for tourists, and people who dine in NOLA a few times a year was spot on. I've probably been more times then most on this board, and aside from a few dishes it's forgettable.

I know quite a few people who are locals that dine out often who frequent this place. Your premise is simply not true. Yes it's a great tourist spot due to it's unique atmosphere, but plenty of locals love it as well. Although I don't get to frequent many restaurants lately due to time constraints, I have been to quite a few places over the years that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I find the food here excellent, although there are things that they don't do well. I wouldn't hold it against someone for not liking it, nor should anyone hold it against me for enjoying it. It's called taste and preference. Some on these boards forget that and feel that a place they don't enjoy ought not be enjoyed by anyone else. That's most certainly pretentiousness.

That's a reach. I took his statement to mean a place of JI's caliber serving $30 étouffée.

If prices were driven based on quality of food, they're off about 30%.

I like Jacque Imo's a lot but most of their entrees are smothered in a thick sauce. I feel like passing out immediately after eating there. The food is very tasty just heavy

I like Jacque Imo's, but it is not a good value restaurant. I think of the place as serving upscale comfort food in a "don't give a frick" environment. It's great if you have been partying or intend to go partying, and just go on the spur of the moment, but it's not a place I make advance plans to go.

I am not a fan....schlocky food that's about as subtle as Waffle House. Decor is frat boy meets aging hippie jazz fest fan. Service is haphazard. So so many restos in NOLA are turning out excellent, non gimmicky local flavors with pride and care....for similar flavors, would rather Toups Meatery, Boucherie, or even good ol Brigtsens (always a good choice when seeking rabbit dishes) over JI. The decorated trucks on the sidewalk is pure undergraduate silliness.

Hey now, Waffle House is light years ahead culinary wise than Jacque-Imo's

Your average Waffle House is cleaner and has better service, as well.

Can't go wrong with anything. Stuffed pork chop my fav. Love the fried chicken too. Seams like you can get there anywhere but don't be afraid to order it. Top 2 or 3 I've ever had.

Seems to me that's the primary thing driving its popularity.
