I've recently discovered this fantastic cocktail. They are great for the summer.

I don't have copper mugs, so have just been making them in regular hi-ball glasses. Do they really taste different in the Copper mugs?

I'm using
Ketel One
Trader Joes Ginger Beer
Lime Juice

Didn't have any mint on hand, so haven't been using mint. Does it really need the mint? Will it make it even better?
In what form are y'all using mint? A liquid extract or actual mint leaves? Asking b/c the mint extract would be better for me as it wouldn't really go bad quickly and i'd d more likely to have it always on hand.

This is close to the "I don't have a cast iron pot, can I make Jambalaya" question.

The recipe I got from Total Wine has mint listed. Good to know I don't need it, b/c I think it's fine without it.

never have used mint, candied ginger is a nice addition though (although not necessary). i haven't really found much benefit to the copper mug other than looking fancy.

Mint? That would ruin it.

I use copper mugs but only because I have them in the bar.

Did it with ginger ale once and it wasn't the same. It wasn't bad, but ginger beer really makes the drink, and the lime juice has to be fresh squeezed IMO.

I go the Kentucky Mule route and use bourbon instead of Vodka, and I do have copper mugs but you don't have to have them.

The one at Bar Tonique is one of my favorite cocktails. It doesn't have mint.

The first Moscow Mule I ever had was at Tonique. A client of mine (French Quarter entertainer) took me there a few years ago. Good cocktail.

Necessary? No.

But apparently the copper has a chemical reaction that changes the flavor slightly. Hence it needs to be a copper mug, not one of those cheap copper plated stainless inside kinds.

Could I tell the difference? No. But I also don't claim I can tell the difference in Vodkas. If someone says they have a "favorite" vodka and yet thinks the copper mug is not a factor, I call BS.

Ruth's Chris doesn't serve them in copper mugs and they taste pretty damn good.
