Is it just me or is it not good?

I love Asian food. I have been eating and making legit ramen for years. I love pho. I love Thai curries. I have never not enjoyed Asian flavors. I love fish sauce in soups and sauces.

I had Pad Thai tonight and it was terrible. It was at a restaurant that I love and trust. When it got to the table it looked great but it smelled like a wet dirty dog. I even asked the server if it was supposed to smell like that. He said that was how it was supposed to smell. He politely asked me if I had ever had Pad Thai and I said no. I proceeded to eat it (and in its defense, the flavor did kind of grow on me) but I could not eat it all.

I say all of that to ask, is that normal? Is the flavor profile of pad Thai that far away from other south East Asian dishes? Like I said, I trust this restaurant and I intend on going back for other things. I just want to know if this is normal?

Did it contain shrimp? I’m thinking maybe the shrimp were off.

It did have shrimp but that was the part of the dish that actually tasted good. The bad smell was not a shrimp smell.

Pad Thai is probably my least favorite Thai dish. It’s still alright, but I much prefer Pad Se Ew.

You probably don’t like tamarind; that’s the taste that makes par thai different than other stir fried noodles

Does tamarind have an off putting smell? What other dishes would it be used in?

I like the shrimp pad thai from Thai Kitchen(BR). My gripe is its not a whole lot for $15.

No. Could it have been bean sprouts? I don't eat much pad Thai, but I've never experienced what you are describing when I have.

I love all types of Asian foods, particularly Thai.

I do not care for the dish.

Yeh I think it’s the taramind. I’ve had it for the first time in a very long time at a local joint. I had the same reaction.... smells kind of sour, but per the folks there that’s the way it’s supposed to smell. Tasted great...

It’s got fish sauce in it. Smells like sewer, but it’s so damn good.

I’m not a big fan of Pad Thai either. Love pretty much every other Thai dish I’ve tried that wasn’t mint forward.

I agree with Cold Drink. It's the tamarind for me - it has a funky taste that's not quite the same as other asian foods.

I know the fish sauce wasn’t the culprit. The smell was not of death and rotten flesh so I know it wasn’t the fish sauce. I like fish sauce and I use it frequently in significant amounts at my house.

Get it from the other place and see. I say other, the Chinese place by Tractor Supply actually has good Pad Thai.

Sounds like too much fish sauce. FS is great in all asian dishes, but it's easy to use too much.

Pad Thai is a staple, and it's delicious. I personally prefer curries, but my wife always gets this. It works out, because I get the best of both worlds.

The best Thai places IMO are:
Mama Thai in Lakeview
Sukho Thai on Magazine
Sawasdee in Mandeville

I’ve had really funky Pad Thai before as well.. but it’s not like that everywhere. When it’s good, it’s great.
