Is it a good idea for restaurants to open?

We're told by experts every day about the importance of social distancing and wearing masks in public. With the opening of restaurants, you're now huddling multiple people within a six foot radius and without masks, since you can't wear them to eat. Servers who set down and pick up plates will come within a foot of diner's faces hundreds of times a week, and then ours. In a barber shop for instance, both parties would wear masks, and there aren't multiple items touched by multiple people. In restaurants, our servers will be handling our silverware for instance. Those things aren't going to be disinfected for each use. Perhaps a good idea would be for restaurants to switch to disposable cutlery.
Everyone is chomping at the bit for restaurants to open, but it sounds like a recipe for disaster, promoting, inviting and encouraging the spread of the virus and contradicting all recommended precautions.
Thoughts?

Friend,
Unfortunately, this will become a heated political discussion, so I am declining comment.

Yes. Next question.

Yes, complete fricking hoax. What is the difference of shopping in a full grocery store or Lowe’s/ Home Depot than sitting 4’ away from others while eating all the while restaurants have yet to stop take out orders?

I think the initial framework will be a bit different to accommodate the guidelines and as the virus continues to become less pandemic they can start doing what was normal food services.

I am beyond pissed that our society is politicizing things like this.
Our country is so stupid that people have to have their party leaders tell them how to think.

We have to open them up with proper restrictions in place.

What restrictions? Everyone wear masks? Everyone stop what they’re doing every 30 minutes and wash their hands? Everyone put hand sanitizer on their food in lieu of salt, pepper, cheese, etc?
Where does it end? Dying ain’t no way to live.

Wife basically asked this same question tonight as we ate takeout from DiGiulio's.
She saw a article from China where they studied a group of cases that were linked to dining at a particular restaurant. There were three large tables in the dining room. At the table with the first infected person, everyone was eventually found positive, everyone at the second table also eventually tested positive and three people at the third table ended up positive. They decided the infections tracked with the air flow pattern from the room A/C.
It's from China, so who knows. But now they are saying length of exposure to an infected person is also a risk even if there is no contact. So sitting in a restaurant for a hour+ with someone at a neighboring table who might be infected does raise a concern even if the restaurant does everything it can to protect its customers.

These drive thrus are processing hundreds of cars a day. You would think the cashier at the windows would be contracting covid at all of these places, considering all of the people they come in contact with. In turn, passing it along to the other fast food workers who are surely not practicing proper distancing

Great response. Don't expect the brainwashed lemmings to understand this. If they don't want to go out to eat they are welcome to stay home. I don't get what is so hard about this situation. If you want to live in fear NO ONE is forcing you to go anywhere. For the rest of us it's time to get back to living.

I think they should open if and when they want to open and let the people decide if they want to go or not.

When have the “experts” been right? (Before they repeatedly moved the goal posts)

Walt’s just pullin TooLame’s chain.
Walt pays enough child support to prove he doesn’t scissor dudes.

I imagine it’s hard to reopen a restaurant and hire staff to come in and work when they’re making $600+ a week after tax by simply sitting at home

You think you had a gotcha there and that's cool.
I would be fine with all restaurants that want to open to be able to open tomorrow and do business like normal. To appease the loons though that are concerned we are moving to fast I say do it at 50% of the restaurants capacity for diners and space people apart. Probably not a bad idea because other than the local places that many love, the business is going to be slow to come back. Also as noted earlier, it's going to be tough to get employees for a while.
