Mosca’s is not among the top ten best Italian restaurants in the Metro. Impastato’s remains firmly planted at #1 on that list and any such list that does not include America’s finest Creole Italian restaurant is ridiculous. And Seither’s?
Both places are rather sad at the moment, in my estimation.
I can still somewhat appreciate Mosca's for what it is, but it would probably still be overpriced for what they serve if they cut all menu prices in half.
Impastato's is putrid.

Pretty solid list, as I generally think mcnulty is in bed with some of these places. I’m surprised Porgy’s isn’t on his list

All those are great, I’d add paladar to that list.
Under global flavors, I’d add Dakar and Saba.

He’s tried to pump those poor folks in each of their various iterations for years.
Seems like they need a business/financial person, much more than a perennially friendly food writer.

Holy shite you’re right.
I’m still blown away that a guy can get so much national attention as a “chef” for slapping together a fried bologna and potato chip sandwich.

Agree with all of this. If you are not over 70, I don't understand "loving" Impastato's.
It is sad.

They should’ve just relocated Marjie’s Grill. I had never been, but based on reception here and elsewhere online it had a good menu and following. Seafood Sally’s menu never looked interesting enough to get me in the door. Porgy’s is a nice concept but I’m too lazy to source seafood from a market at higher prices vs buying what’s at the grocery. I’d guess most of the city is the same.

It was far and away their best iteration. Food was good and interesting, without going the goofy overboard gimmick route.
There’s no way the location was sustainable, though.
I too would think their best shot would be to try to replicate it elsewhere. I don’t profess to really know the business, however.

Bunch, you have strong opinions of places like Imps and Mother’s. Do you eat at those places but hate them?
Posted on 10/11/24 at 1:59 pm to Y.A. Tittle
Marjie's was one of my favorite restaurants in the city.
Seafood Sallys was good at first but went downhill fast
I get fresh fish from Porgy's occasionally, its great to have a place like that. Don't think it will make it

Mollys, their breakfast place, is really good. I’m sure hungry eyes is too but It looks gimmicky and not worth the price point.
TW quit trying years ago as reflected by the pared down, calcified menu and Gets by on tourist money. Anyone who still wastes money on that place is a chump.

Agreed, and Hungry Eyes is good. The food isn't really gimmicky just different, and its good. Didn't find it crazy expensive or anything

You are not wrong. They don't even try anymore

I’m not a fan of shared/ small plates. I’d rather have an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Combined with being in a place that pushes martinis , I figured I’d pay twice as much there (or similar places) as I would elsewhere to be sated. The bang for my buck isn’t there. Not so much a knock on them as HE isn’t my style.

Exact opposite for me
Not sure I've had an entree to myself in a decade
I didn't get a martini there, I just got wine likely I always do

I’m not sure Mason gives much input on the kitchen at Hungry Eyes. Think he just bank rolls it - I could be completely wrong. It’s on my list of places to try though.
Surprised the new meat and three spot didn’t make this list. No clue if it’s good, but feel like anything new from Mason gets love from local media.

I'm just being petty because Paladar and Yakuza House aren't on the list, but Mosca's is. It really isn't a bad list.
I'd remove Mosca's, Seithers, and Toups from the list and replace with Yakuza House, Gonzo's (Luling still counts and ignoring the open twice a week

Yeah I agree with everything you said except Gonzo's I've never been because its open for 7 minutes each week

I really enjoy Hungry Eyes. The food is really good and creative, and I wouldn't call it gimmicky as well. I'm not a martini person, but they usually have a solid wine selection.

Not sure in what category, but I’d add Station 6 to that list
