Me and my wife have a rotating "dinner party" group with 4-5 other couples.

It is our turn to host a party and I want to do a "Chopped" themed party.

I have a large and well stocked kitchen and nice out door grill.

My basic idea is to have each couple bring one ingredient for each of the three baskets and maybe some staples they may think they will need.

If enough people show, we can even do four courses instead of three courses.

We draw names for teams and then draw teams to see which team will get which course.

Probably will not do a time limit (or an hour each).

Any one here every do a party like this and/or have any ideas how to make this work smoothly?

Fun Bunch hosted a monthly Chopped Challenge here. I loved it and still curse the Gods that it no longer exists.

Any time someone blinks they have to remove an article of clothing.

I'd have each couple come up with a few basket ingredients. Then a few days before he dinner do a random drawing of each ingredient. Each couple gets 4 and has to make a dish with them all.

This keeps people from putting some stupid shite in the list in fear they may get it and allows everyone to prepare in advance rather then make some shitty dish in 30 minutes.

I don't want it to be couples vs couples vs couples.

I think random drawn teams will work better (plus I think me and my wife will kill the competition if it's couples vs couples.

I don't blame you for wanting quality time (no time limit) with some other cuck's wife....

You dog you

Are the teams going to cook one team at a time?

Yes, each team will prepare a course, not each team will prepare each course.

So basically, team one makes apps, team two makes entree, and team three makes dessert (and maybe a fourth team makes a soup/salad course)

But, are they all cooking at once or one team at a time?

One at a time...

Team one makes soup/salad (or apps), 45 mins time limit (for example)

Team two makes next course

Team three makes next course

Etc

So, y'all will all eat in between courses. I'll be interested in how it works out. Hope the food is good! I'd probably have a backup plan for pizza just in case.

So if everyone gets there at 6:

Start cooking apps at 630
Eat at 715
Start cooking dinner at 745
Eat at 830
Start cooking desert at 915
Eat at 10?

That's assuming everything goes perfectly and seamlessly.

And I think you're underestimating the stress of preparing a dish with random ingredients in 45 mins with amateur people not even chefs.

It's probably a better idea to send out the basket ingredients and have everyone show up with a dish they created pot luck style.

Or, do it just like Chopped, but not everybody cooks. You need chefs and you need judges. If four couples come you have four chefs and four judges, with one person in the couple as chef and other as a judge.

Thirty minutes for app, hour for entree, 45 minutes for dessert. If other people are bringing basket ingredients, at least assign them categories of ingredients, maybe.

Have each couple bring a basket $25-30, and then yall draw to choose baskets. Each one is a secret. Cant pick your own basket.

You've been watching too much TV I've done an Iron Chef entree challenge and had two hours. That time flies by like nothing.

Im assuming youve already really thought this out, but are you SURE this is something they would all want to do. This sounds like a horrible time to me. If I go over to a friends house, then it is THEIR responsibility to cook for us and entertain us, the same way it is MY responsibility when we have guests over at our house. Why would I want to go to a friend's house to play cooking games when all I want to do is have a few drinks, eat some good food (not experiment with trying to make something good out of random crap) and have some laughs. A bonfire is a bonus.

But, if I were to approach something like this, it would be best to tell everyone what to bring (maybe no specifically, but in general - i.e.- shellfish, or starchy vegetable, or fatty protein, etc) so that they can have somewhat of an idea of what they'll be dealing with. Unless you have some talented friends, getting peanut butter, prawns, and hogs head cheese in a basket wont turn out too well.

I have similar feelings. If this dinner party group is used to this sort of thing, then it might be fine. If the group is used to going to someone's home for a good meal that they don't have to cook, then it might be disappointing, particularly if these folks are known to be very good cooks. I'd be looking forward to a good meal.

I don't think I'd enjoy the "chopped" plan the way it's described for a dinner party. Maybe doing it some other time with a certain group of people would be okay and with back up food or a real meal with just tasting the "chopped" dishes.

I also think it's going to take a long time to have 3 courses, much less 4. You have to clean up in between and get the other people set to cook the next course, getting out all the tools they'll need etc.. Logistically, it could be a big bust, so you need people who won't care if it is.
