I am a dumbass - oven mishap

I started out my mire poix stove top in a large cast iron pan, added some wine, stock, seasoning, then added the browned meat back in. I opened the preheated oven and as I'm holding the cast iron by the handle while putting it in, it unexpectedly gets a bit heavy and just before I can get it on the rack, the vessel tips toward the oven, spilling about half of the future gravy all over my oven bottom. Being too hot to clean up right away, the gravy and veggies began crusting on the oven floor, and I had to finish stove top too because I had to turn off the oven.
I did what I could to recover the dish, which turned out pretty good. Braised turkey neck with black eyed peas, roasted corn, bacon and jasmine rice.
The dish was tasty, but cleaning up the oven today was a bitch.
Anyone else have oven mishap stories?

I had a mini mishap last week. Cooking a turkey breast in oven, opened it up to pop in the meat thermometer I'd just grabbed from the drawer....only to realize 30 minutes later that I hadn't grabbed the metal & glass "real" oven/meat thermo, but the cheapo plastic & metal version. The plastic dial went all shrinky-dink, though the turkey was unimpaired. Why do they even MAKE plastic dial oven thermos? Bah.

I had a really old oven years ago that had to be lit through the broiler on the bottom. I turned on the gas and must have let it build up to much. I reached in with a lighter (was all out of long matches), tried to light the pilot light and a fireball about 5-6 feet long shot out of the broiler and burned all the hair off of my face and arms. It sounded like a bomb went off. Felt pretty dumb.

I was cooking a bunch of bacon in the oven for the Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade brunch we were hosting the next day. I used a cookie sheet that didn't have a lip on it, so the grease from the bacon dripped onto the bottom of the oven. Started a small grease fire in a gas oven. I had to throw baking soda on the fire, then clean up hot grease.

How did this happen? I thought that stuff was oven proof.

This happened to me twice in the same day. Moving into new house. My two toddlers were hungry. I couldn't find box with cookie sheets, so I popped some chicken tenders in a Corningware casserole dish. Put it in a 400 oven and about 5 minutes later it sounded like a pistol had gone off. It had not shattered, but had split.
I though the dish had been chipped in the move and weakened so I moved the tenders to a 9x13 pyrex dish. Put those in the oven and after five minutes thought it was a shotgun blast. This time it it did shatter - and the tenders were blackened.
The oven thermostat was bad and it was probably 900+ degrees. Luckily, sellers had provided a home warranty and it was repaired in a couple of days. Although it would have made a great pizza oven.

I had a pyrex measuring cup shatter in the microwave...it crumbled like safety glass, but was still a b*tch to clean up.

've always had these foil oven liners in the bottom of my ovens for spills etc... They don't fit the entire inside, so I have a big piece of heavy duty foil under it. Makes cleaning a real breeze.
I read that they are disposable. Providing one does not have an accidental spill (highly unlikely), they can be used as many times until there is a true need to dispose of?

I was rubbing some butter on a pan or cornbread before browning it off. I wasn't quick enough with it and the whole stick squirted out of the wrapper and landed in the bottom of my oven.

I buy them at the grocery, usually. Unless I have some dramatic accident, it's a while before it needs to be tossed and they're cheap anyway. You could wrap the tray in foil and toss the foil when it gets dirty if you want. That works, too, but I just toss the tray and put in a new one. I keep a stack of them in the garage. I also use them when I'm seasoning a bunch of chicken for gumbo. They wide and hold a lot of chicken. Then I toss the thing. Easy clean up and keeps the juices in check. I've found some other uses for them.

My SO tried baking cookies on a perforated pizza pan the week I moved in my house. She's a sweet girl but she and the kitchen go together like peanut butter and shoe strings.

I do shite like this occasionally. Interestingly, these days I sort of go into a Zen state and don't break shite like in the old days.

From the GE site:
Using the Oven Section:
Do not use aluminum foil to line oven bottoms. The foil will trap heat below, and upset the performance of the oven. Foil can melt and permanently damage the oven bottom. Damage from improper use of aluminum foil is not covered by the product warranty.
This lady voided the warranty on her brand new Samsung when she lined it with foil the first night to cook a frozen pizza. Parts of the foil melted and stuck to the oven.

My Mom has been awfully lucky all those years of foil under a oven liner.

The lady with the Samsung said her family had done it for years growing up. Then her new oven welded it the first time. You takes your chances.

No oven mishaps here, but I've learned not to handle knives in my bare feet. I'm kinda bad about dropping stuff.

Even the greatest chefs on the planet have kitchen mishaps. If you never had a kitchen mishap, you aint never cooked.
