Why would you walk into any establishment and assume something was free?

Because they don't list a charge on the menu.

Using your logic, someone who orders a coke and a cookie for $5 should tip the same as a bottle of Champagne and a caviar appitizer for $100. Right? Same amount of work. Bringing it to the table.

They don't but they can get the manager to remove the item. If the manager can't come right aways, the server can move the item to another ticket and have it voided later.

i agree with "deduct amount of drink from tip".

a) it's crappy that they charged you if it's not listed

b) she said she would take it off

c) she didn't so she basically lied then over charged your credit card (basically fraudulently)

you could have just asked her to do it again if you have that type of patience, or you could just deduct it and pay the same as you would have originally. it's not your fault she's dumb. you gave her a chance.

i think people should remember a tip is like basically saying "hey, you did a good job, here's a little extra for you"... clearly in this case she didn't do a good job.

D) ask her to remove the drink and then tip 15% after she fixed the problem. unless i have reason to believe she was being dishonest or really rude about it all.

Did you not read the original post? He asked her to and she said she’d take care of it and took his card but didn’t take care of it and charged the full amount. Dishonest or dumb, it’s on her.

D) Ask to speak the manager, have him/her remove the drink, leave no tip, tell everyone what a shitty restaurant it is, and never eat there again.

Wow. I've never thought about it that way but you make a good point. It is the same amount of work so I guess we really shouldn't be tipping based on the prices charged.

ETA: I would deduct price of drink from any tip I was leaving.

actually- at a high end places they usually have water boys, food runners, bread refillers, pre-bussers, ect. so the actual server basically only takes the order and opens the bottle of wine. they probably tip out a pretty good percentage, but the amount of "work" isn't all that much

1. If she has big tits, leave a tip.
2. Don't use a credit card at a sammich shop. Use cash. Much faster.

yes i read it. most likely took his credit card and the check and got caught up doing a couple of other things so when she went to run it she forgot.

big deal. like i said, unless i had reason to believe it was malicious then things'd be diff

Not true.

A mistake was made and you should have brought her attention to it again then leave a tip based on the amount of the bill and the cost of a drink regardless of if you paid for it or it was FREE water. She still put ice in a glass and filled it with water and brought it to your table then bussed the table and someone had to wash the glass. It is the same amount of work no matter what the contents of the glass are.

Personally I would have paid for the drink she charged and tipped on that amount, told her "have a nice day" and moved on. Tends to keep the blood pressure in check. Not everyone in life is perfect and if you are going to complain this much about a FREE glass of water I see future hypertension for you.

There are some cheap motherfrickers on this board.

so you just enjoy paying for something that they dont charge for?
how about if they threw an order of fires on your bill.. you didnt order them, but they charged you for them and didnt even being them out?

I dont know about the rest of you guys, but I really dont like paying for things that arent correct on my bill... regardless if its 1 dollar or 10 dollars.
Has nothingn to fricking to do with being cheap, it has to do with getting it right.

If you are this worked up about getting it right then you should have told the girl a second time the bill is not right instead of coming on here and asking a stupid multiple choice question.

If we all adhered to this or some variation of it, we might as well shut the board down.

No but if you give multiple choice options or are asking for opinions you have to be open minded and thick skinned enough to take the heat when the foodtards light your candle.
