re: How is The Bulldog in BR doing these days with all the recent nationwide brewery closures?

I don’t think people realize how busy they were for pint nights. I mean, wall to wall full of people and you’d have trouble finding a parking spot.

Did you find the costs going up after or during Covid? I thought they were pretty stable up until 2 years ago.

Everything started noticeably going up in price in 2022 and got ridiculous through 2024. It’s still increasing, but not nearly as fast since 2025.
Craft beer was already not cheap before Covid, too. A lot of premium limited releases were going for $18 for a 4 pack in 2019!

Are they close to $30 these days?

Bulldog on Perkins during/post Covid absolutely, 100% was overboard with restrictions. It’s whatever, especially at this point, but their entire staff were all trust the science people. Kicking people out that didn’t follow spacing guidelines. It was interesting.

They also had like a $10 minimum on all CC purchases at one point. I get it - fees aren't cheap, but that turns off some folks too.

Oh yes, I remember this all too well.
The Covid posts are true too.
It looks like they've changed some things up lately, which is nice to see. I personally would like to see ownership making some changes to the physical space. Cleaning duties falling to bartenders outside of normal bar upkeep, broken TVs, broken outdoor heaters, the still-broken outdoor fountain on the patio.. All those little things add up, especially with female customers who already see the place as divey/dark. And those are ownership issues far more than anything having to do with staff onsite.
Drive by Duvic's during the day any day of the week, and their maintenance/cleaning folks are there working. And it's one of the diviest spots around.
Plus, Bulldog comes up as a bar and grill on Google, so the expectations from patrons are a little more raised from that. No idea if that is something you can get changed, but it definitely seems like all of their negative reviews online are from people expecting a full service restaurant. So mismatched expectations aren't helping. For example, there's no way I could even count how many times people have tried to come in with kids.

Yes, it was pretty intense. I am sure the directive came from ownership, who don't live in the area, but it didn't help that a few of the staff went rogue with how intensely to enforce it.
We went in once at 2pm on a Monday, only souls in the entire building, and headed straight to the patio knowing that they were doing table service only at the time.
The bartender (who was my friend at the time) shouted at us at full volume from across the bar not to walk any further inside so she can come seat us. We laughed it off, but it was just not based in any logic. Nobody was there!

The Mid-City Bulldog is almost always empty. Not sure how it is surviving. I'd really hate to see it close because I live close by, but they do not seem to be doing anything to get people in there.

Was in there last Wednesday and there were about 6 people in there around 8 but I have been there before on Thursday Trivia night and it’s packed so who knows.

Just order a bud heavy. Enough drama.

I lived around the corner at its peak in 2013 and we never missed a Wednesday night. Was such a fun, cozy spot especially in the winter when it was decorated with Christmas stuff. Fun Times. One of the worst places to try to drive home from though, learned that the hard way.
Last time i went was for a saints game on a Sunday about 3 years ago and my wife and I were the only ones in there. The floor was disgusting it was covered in dog hair and looked pretty dingy in the day time. I love dogs and know its a popular dog owner spot but cmon man you gotta clean the floors.

Definitely its peak. The decor for Christmas was pretty. I remember that as well.

The sun definitely beams in during daytime and accentuates the floors.
Realistically, they're just too large and too messy a concept (beer, bar food, and dogs) to leave cleaning duties to bartenders after a long shift at 2AM. They need a cleaning crew who comes early in the mornings. Not sure why ownership wouldn't pay for that service, but maybe it's a lot more expensive than I envision?
I cleaned every single day between classes for Northgate Tavern when I was in college. Every single day, it needed a solid 2-3 hours of work from me to be actually clean.

stopped by Bulldog on Magazine right before Saints game started and it was absolutely empty on a beautiful day. First time I've been there in 7-8 years.

Magazine street rent must be very high too. Makes you wonder how much longer can they sustain being there without being busy.

BRPD was always ambushing people leaving around 2 a.m. I saw so many people walking the line in the McDonald's parking lot, again this was over 14 years ago.

Whatever happened to all of these checkpoints. You didn’t see them much at all before 2010 or so and you certainly don't see any these days.
Posted on 9/30/26 at 7:17 pm to Paul Allen
I think it comes down to funding presently for BRPD. A lot of officers have left the department and the sheer manpower it takes to run a checkpoint, BRPD doesn't have the manpower to sustain DWI checkpoints. Moreover, the state received significant funding over a decade ago from federal grants to establish the checkpoints, which why we saw them practically ever weekend many moons ago.

early to mid 2010s it felt like there was a dui checkpoint somewhere in the white/south side of Baton Rouge every weekend
