La Fonda isn’t objectively bad, but it’s staggeringly overrated. People go there because it’s where people have always gone. If you wiped the nostalgia from people’s minds, it would be closed in a year or so.

If you decide to get food I recommend a Ribeye, Don Briggs Style with the fried potatoes as the side

Says BR is on par or better than Lafayette then doesn’t give a single example.

Beau Soleil, Chimes, Masons Grill, Parrains, Louisiana Lagniappe, Sammy’s, SouthFin Poke, Fat cow, Curbside. The list goes on..
There’s a ton of good places to eat in Baton Rouge. You gotta realize that EBR is the biggest in the state so naturally they’re gonna have just as many if not more quality places to eat. Anyone who refuses to acknowledge the BR food scene is just another person who hates the whole city because they always get stuck in traffic. There’s good food in Lafayette and BR. It’s the same pound for pound. Y’all should be happy we can all enjoy such good food within such a short distance. We’re blessed with good food in South LA.

Interesting recollection of this thread. If only there were a way to go back and see what was actually said...

yep. And I say this is as a baton rouge native. Im being unbiased and know how much better Laffy’s food is. A lot more diverse items and better quality. Also a popeyes buffet.

Please elaborate, because as a Lafayette native, I just don’t see it. Only restaurant in Lafayette I make a point of going to is Pamplona. Pretty much anywhere else worth going to, I can get in Baton Rouge.

*Cpt posts a general list of restaurants in Lafayette*
quote:
Sure, and I could list off a selection from the hundreds of restaurants in Baton Rouge, but that's not responsive to what I asked. I'm not saying that Lafayette doesn't have good food, and lots of it. It was posited that the selection and quality of food in Lafayette is far superior to that of Baton Rouge. As someone who spends a significant amount of time in both cities, I just don't see it. Other than Korean BBQ, apparently, I'm at a loss for what I can get in Lafayette that I can't get an equivalent or better in Baton Rouge, Pamplona already being conceded as the exception.
So after exhausting myself going back and reading two whole pages of posts, it's fairly obvious that I asked the individuals making the assertion to give me an example of what Lafayette offered that I couldn't get in Baton Rouge. I've conceded that I would love for something like Pamplona to open in Baton Rouge, even with Cocha flirting with the concept. But beyond that? Still waiting for someone, anyone, to give me an example of something Lafayette does markedly better.
I have a feeling I'll be waiting a while...

If Janky is simply looking for "good" restaurants, I wish he'd ask for it. I'm disinclined to be his personal Yelp page. But I posted this top 10 not too long ago:
And now that I've been to Soji twice, I would easily put it on that list. And that's keeping things contained. I could easily bloat that list with excellent restaurants like Gino's, Eliza, Juban's, Beau Soleil, etc, etc, etc...
quote:
Maison Lacour
City Pork (Jefferson)
Cocha
Mansurs
Nino’s
French Market Bistro
Kalurah
Casual honorable mentions: Zorba's, Rocca, and Overpass Merchant to round out my now annoyingly long list of 10.

Which is frustrating, because it’s the opposite of what I want. It’s why I didn’t post some giant list of every decent restaurant in town.
It’s the same bullshite pattern on this board: someone says how obvious it is that the food scene in Lafayette just blows Baton Rouge out of the water. Then when you ask for detail, everyone either falls over themselves repeating how obvious it is and so no further argument needed, complains about being asked for detail in the first place, or disappears entirely.
Lafayette is a great food town, particularly when you consider its size. But Baton Rouge is a great food town as well, and anyone saying otherwise should probably venture out from just going to Walk Ons or Chimes on game day.

Order a pitcher of their frozen half and half margarita (sangria and regular margarita mix)
That will get you feeling right

Baton Rouge does need a Korean BBQ and I too am surprised and disappointed there is not one here. I have contemplated about opening one and I think it would be successful if done properly, but based on other things don't think I would have the time to give it the focus.
The Asian restaurants in Baton Rouge are awful. IMO, good Korean BBQ is not cheap, and the people who will associate it with "Chinese food" will not see the difference in good food and the $5.99 combo w/ drink buffet grade food.
If I recall correctly, over 10 years ago BR used to have a Korean restaurant, and it did not do well. There are plenty of Korean families here (enough to suppose multiple churches) to support the operation, etc of the restaurant. But the key here is: will the non-Korean population support the restaurant. The answer to that question was "no" in years past. I really don't think this city was open minded enough to the idea. shite, we have some of the best Vietnamese food in the area and general populace still don't know about the staples like Dangs. It's frustrating even though I shouldn't be. More food and space for me. It's just aggravating how closed minded some people are.
Today? Korean food is much more mainstream and I think it has a much better chance. The Korean BBQ scene is very easy to pick up even for those who are picky (think Hibachi with lettuce wraps), so as long as the focus is there, I think it could carve a nice little niche out. But there is a risk and I wouldn't call it a 'sure thing' by any means.

You're fortunate to live in a world class food town. Hell, I'm very much looking forward to my Saba reservation tomorrow.
Doesn't change the fact that there are great things currently happening Baton Rouge.

There are spots in Baton Rouge that I adore, some of which no longer exist. I used to love Ronnie's Jamaican food, love the lengua tacos at el Limon, the cup and a half at Dempsey's is something you don't see around the rest of the US, the crispy smelt at Waka House is my personal fav app, the beef ribs at TJ's are delish, Dang's pho...yum, etc., but I wouldn't call BR a great food town. Not bashing, but after living in other cities, I'm just not impressed. Lafayette is no world class food town (troll), but I'd take it any day over BR.

I thought you lived in Nola, for some reason. My reference to Saba should support that belief.
Go back and read my last post through that lens, then we can have a discussion.

Lafayette is ok, but it manages to disappoint me for some reason. It has a lot of promise, seems to me, but just never fully delivers for me. Hard to explain. Much of it seems more generic than it should be
