These grass fed steaks I started trying this year seem to be much tougher than regular steaks that were fed a corn based diet. Is it just me or is this common with grass fed beef?

Honestly, I don’t get the point of grass fed steaks. The cows already dead so who cares what you feed it?

The diet and treatment of a cow drastically changes the quality of the beef.

That being said, the whole grass fed v. any other type of fed cow in big stores is massively overblown.

Ok apparently my dad joke didn’t land. Probably because I don’t have kids.

No amount of marketing will change my opinion. For a good steak, grain finished will always be the better product.

It's very easy to overcook a grass fed steak. And if it's grass fed, grass finished, it will be tougher than grass fed, grain finished.

Actress Kristen Schaal grew up on her family's Colorado cattle ranch. When she was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, he asked her if they ever ate any of the cattle.

She said they sometimes did if one was injured and had to be put down, "but the meat wasn't any good because it was grass fed."

I thought that was hilarious. Folks now pay extra for grass fed, but a family living on a ranch full of grass fed cattle preferred beef finished on grain.

We're all so used to corn/grain finished beef that true grass fed is like an entirely different animal.

Most people just will not like it.

All cattle are grass fed. But back in the day they figured out if you fattened their arse up with grain before you ate them the tasted a helluva lot better. Nothing has changed since then.

It seems like grass fed grass finished usually produces a leaner steak with less marbling. Grain finished definitely has more marbling from what I've seen. If I'm going for a better taste, then I'm not looking for grass finished. I've heard that grass finished has a better nutrient content, but I'm not a scientist so who knows.

In my experience, grass fed ground beef is damn good, but for steaks, it's not worth it.

I believe the point of grass finished is the hippies think it's more humane than a grain feedlot that has the cows piled into a smallish pen standing on a huge pile of grain... I'm not positive but those massive feedlots in the mid west are a PETA nightmare

Those said feedlots are a goose conservation season wet dream as well... or so I've heard.

I like some of the stuff from Iverstines but I didn't care much for the grass fed steaks.

Grass fed beef is high in omega-3 fatty acid. It’s good for brain development.

*also not a scientist*

I ordered a quarter cow - 100% grass fed. Never again. Tough and much gamey-er than grass fed/grain finished

I always thought the raising of the calf played a bigger part.

Cattle that was raised in limited areas and "did not run" much did not develop much muscle and were more tender.

IMHO
