It is tuned like a guitar but upside down.

Few points:
There is always more of whatever you are mandolin raining. There arent more fingers. Meaning throw out the stub of the potato/carrot
I like to use a toothpick and connect the tip of whatever I am mandolining to a half of potato. The potato acts as a handle/barrier. So long as you have a good idea where the toothpick is, you should be fine

Tip#1 - use the guard
Tip#2 - use the guard
Tip#3 - use the guard
First time I used mine........I nearly took my thumb off.

I had a run in with a mandolin as a teenager. Sliced a little chunk off my thumb. They still scare me.
ETA: I was not using the guard.

This. I haven't bought one because I know I'd think I wouldn't need to use the guard

I dont remember if I cut myself on mine or not but it just seemed scary. Im probably just as fast with a knife anyway. Not sure if I threw it away or its in a cabinet some where.

My sister threw hers away after the first use (using the guard) and a trip to the hospital with a bit of her pinky missing.

LOL @ you guys freaking out over a bit of missing nubbage. 1. Don't be an idiot. 2. Keep inventory of your appendages. 3. Don't be an idiot.
Slice on.

I understand the mandolin presents the opportunity for an injury, but come on folks, all you have to do is pay attention to what you're doing. That said, the mandolin should provide many outstanding meals for you. And the guard is there for a reason !

Used a mandolin plenty of times. Never used a guard or glove. Just watch what ur doing, not ur tv or kids

Mandolins are awesome. Toss up between them and the banjo for GOAT instrument.

Same rule of thumb for the knife. Keep your digits away from the business end of the sharp object.
Knuckles for knives, and Palm for mandolin
