I've never had a meal at the original location, but next month I'm taking a group of Texas friends to NOLA and this is one of the places they picked.

My questions are these:

1. Should I make a reservation? I know the Friday lunch is famous - is it worth waiting in line for?

2. What are the can't miss dishes?

Most Saturdays, you can waltz in at lunch without a reservation and get a table downstairs. So if you hate waiting in line, that’s a time to consider.

There are no reservations to eat downstairs which is where you should eat.

How many folks will be in the group?

What days of the week will you be there and what are the times and days that are options for Galatoire's?

This was my biggest concern

The group is 5. My wife and I both lived in NOLA at one point (she has eaten here) and the other 3 will be visiting for the first time. We are going in Mid October and our options are Thursday dinner, Friday Lunch or Dinner, or Saturday dinner.

Most dinners you can get in downstairs without too long of a wait. Maybe half an hour and you can have a drink upstairs. The lines are really a lunchtime phenomenon.

As far as what to order I suggest treating it like a Spanish tapas meal. Drinks and appetizers drinks and appetizers. Let your waiter guide you. Lamb chops there are very good and a sleeper hit.

You could also order fried chicken. Ask 100 people how to order at Galatoires and you will get 25 answers. But everyone has their exact routine.

You shouldn't have a problem at night. I would select Thursday night about 6:30 or 7:00. The last 3 times I've gone have been on a Thursday night. It filled up eventually on all three of those nights, but it was easy to get a table right away.

As BO said, you'll get a lot of different answers on what to order. Souffle potatoes are a fun "for the table" app to get with drinks. One order will do it. I can't be there without ordering the oysters rock. I love the rockefeller sauce there. There are shrimp and crabmeat apps that are all good. The fish dishes are all good. I usually get amandine. Last time I was there, it was a cold January night and I strayed from the fish and had the crabmeat au gratin which was hot, creamy, delicious and plentiful with crab.

The menu is large so you shouldn't have a problem finding something for everyone. The problem is narrowing it down.

IMO it’s not worth waiting in line for. I always get the crab meat salad, usually get puppy drum dish, and bread pudding.

I wouldn’t expect it to be exceptional. It’s reliably good Creole food that has about a century of tradition. There are 50 better restaurants in New Orleans. I enjoy it but my expectations are never too high.

We’re going for the experience. I’m not under any illusions that it will be the best meal I’ve had. This is a classic NOLA restaurant that my friends picked.

Don’t get relegated to upstairs. I’m pretty sure it’s a different kitchen all together and their “B” team wait staff.

If they say you can sit upstairs just go to Antoine’s

I was there last week. Here are my answere to your questions: Don't make reservations because you want to sit downstairs and they don't take reservations downstairs. Yes, Friday lunch is worth waiting in line for. We always order potatoes soufflé, seafood goutte appetizer, pompano or whatever fish the waiter recommends, and sweet potato cheesecake for dessert. Galatoire's is my favorite restaurant.

Thanks. What kind of wait times are we talking for Friday lunch? Is it like get there at 10:30 and you’ll get in or Franklin BBQ hours long waits?

That order sounds like perfection.

For a group of 5 I would say get there 30min before open and you should be fine getting a table downstairs. I think Friday lunch is absolutely worth going to.

One person should get there no later than 10:00. The rest can take their time.

So I’d have to get in line before 10? That’s doable but pushing it.

I’m guessing the same dress code applies for Friday lunch?
