Found OP's delivery driver.

Yep, I only have cash on me if I'm going to some sort of festival or something that I know doesn't accept plastic. I used to keep a $20 in my wallet, but I don't even do that anymore. It's not convenient to go to the ATM to get cash, because I rarely need it and have direct deposit.

The restaurant's delivery fee policy is pretty ridiculous but you did stiff the driver. I can understand restaurants having a delivery fee to offset costs of containers, bags, plastic forks, sauce packets, etc... but 20% is excessive.

The food cost was $17
They added $4.30
Let's say he adds $4 as a tip.
Adding another 50% onto your food total price is a little ridiculous

Being a lazy fat boy who stiffs delivery drivers and still expects food delivered to his door is a little ridiculous.
He stiffed the kid.

Adding a delivery fee that amounts to 25% of the bill is ridiculous.
Fwiw, I still would have tipped the guy.

The going rate for the delivery fee here is $4.99 regardless of the amount of the bill. I do tip the driver 20% on the amount of the food bill. This is from a food delivery company that serves about twenty different real restaurants, not fast-food joints.

Yes, it's not the poor kid's fault that the restaurant charges a high delivery fee. If the delivery fee is too high, order from somewhere else.

It's not the fact that they pay with checks, it's when they wait until AFTER the total is announced, THEN they decide to write in who it's made out to, the date, what it's for, and their signature. All that shite can be done while the groceries are being scanned.
From the time the clerk says 'That will be 24.50, Mr. Zach' till the time the money is in her hand is about 1/4th of 1 second.

quote:This is my dilemma when I eat at a sushi bar. I feel like I'm on the spot when the waiter brings the credit card receipt with a line to put the tip, and also there's a tip jar that's been staring me in the face the entire meal. I feel I need to not only tip the waiter but also the chefs. If you'd tip 20%, do you leave 10% for the waiter and 10% for the chefs? The chefs are paid by the hour while the waiters are not, but since I'm generally a 20%+ tipper I find myself having to drop a 30-40% tip between the two. Sushi ain't cheap either.

Oh, I have been there, my child. Zach's brother is a psychologist. He says it's a form of control. They are women, old and ugly but they can make you wait and there's nothing you can do about it.

I've been there. I just look at them and say to myself, "that's somebody's gam gam. How would you want a stranger to treat yours?"
So I smile, shake my head approvingly, like hell yeah that's awesome you're still writing checks for a 1/2 gallon of milk and your Metamucil," and say to myself serenity now.....serenity now.

You don't get airline miles when you use cash.

Restaurant: So, you're NOT going to come dirty up a table, use our condiments, take the time of our waiter, use our bathroom, or make us wash your dishes? Instead, we just throw your food in a box and bag and send a delivery boy? And you will pay his compensation in the form of a tip?
Customer: Yes.
Restaurant: Well, we'll have to charge you extra for that.
