Yuck. Not that stuff that looks like vomit with French's fried onion rings (from a can) on top.

Thankfully, my mom was able to get the recipe, and it lives on in my own cookbook.
Why don't you share this recipe with us?

Seriously? It comes from Georgia/Virginia/Carolinas area of the South. I'll see it as a side occasionally at BBQ places in Memphis too. I guess if you've spent most of your time on the Texas/Louisiana side of the South you might not have seen it or cooked it growing up
Basically whatever leftover meat you might have, butter beans, corn, okra in a tomato based stew

Ultimate southern meal. Pork roast and gravy over rice. Purple hull peas, skillet smothered okra with onions, fresh tomato and cucumber, and cornbread.

Sorry, bruh. That's Yankee territory.

I love fried okra, but when you get it in a restaurant, it's amazing how many places can't really cook it, turning it instead into hard little rocks with a thick batter. You can't even taste the okra.

Brunswick stew is something I always associate with Kentucky, too. Seems like a lot of folks there like it.

I was going to say carrot soufflé because Piccadilly always had it
But it’s French
fried okra is my favorite ‘southern’ side dish
I do love squash and greens too

I might consider jambalaya as one of my favorite sides although it can also be an entree.
