Always "meant" to check this place out, but never went. Guess I wasn't alone in that regard.

The number of places downtown that are closing is pretty alarming. From what I've heard there are a few more that are on the brink as well.

Is downtown just DOA at this point?

They probably closed because you meant to go and didn’t... JS

It's been closed for at least a month now. Tried to go after work on a Friday and the doors were shut at 5:30. Found it strange that there was no social media post and nothing on their website. That stretch of 3rd street is dead now.

eta: a shame because their drinks were good and they had a good tap/bottle list.

Went a couple times just to try it. Nothing there to really make me want to go back. Just on that block alone, BTR is better for food and beers, and The River Room is better for cocktails.

As for downtown, its gotten progressively worse over the last 2 years. I think BTR and River Room are 2 of the most underrated bars in BR, but I don't go much just because I don't go downtown.... Downtown works when you can bar hop, but having trashy places like City Bar, 1913, and Hueys basically splitting downtown fricks it all up and drives people away. Also, the local government helped kill downtown by not letting people take drinks outside. You have a handful of bars right next to a music festival, but you don't let people buy their drinks and take them to the festival?

Last comment. Running Club does a ton of business for Happys on Tuesdays. How have none of these places thought to have a trivia night with food and drink specials every Wednesday/Thursday at like 5:30, and market the shite out of it? I feel like people wouldn't mind having a couple beers and playing trivia once a week, so they don't have to sit through the shite traffic.

Aren’t 2 of these closed as well?

Driftwood started out pretty strong with a great tap list but man was it ever poorly run. Not surprised it didn’t make it.

Bars off Perkins and government are doing well because there are surrounding areas to support them

Downtown living just hasn’t taken off like they had once hoped it would. They have some nice places down there but unless you work there it’s tough to justify the cost of paying that much in rent in Baton Rouge.

Seems like downtown has lost all its momentum that it had from around 2006-2012...

Word on the streets of BR is the owner of Driftwood and another seasoned BR bar person are working together to reopen Driftwood as a Country & Western themed bar.

Also, this is not a joke.

Have to start gentrifying everything between downtown and the garden district before downtown can be worth a damn.

Outside of happys, I don’t see any bar surviving long term anymore downtown, unless the owner doesn’t mind hemorrhaging money (I.e. Bald Eagle)

On a tangent, the comments on the Biz Report site are nothing short of hilarious. A bar downtown closes and people are complaining that instead of more bars we should be fixing roads and schools.

I guess some folks assume the government opens these businesses.

It is a shame downtown hasnt really stuck, I am not sure why. Plenty of people work down there, but nobody is interested in living there. I never feel threatened by anyone downtown, there are a few homeless, but that is typical for any city. There is free parking all over the place, short walks to the bars/ easy access to the interstate/LSU/mid-city. Seems like downtown needs more lunch spots instead of crappy dive bars.

Downtown is a disaster. It's a ghost town Sunday to Thursday and the weekend it's a bunch of trash going out down there. No reason to go out downtown unless you live down there

You pass up better bars and restaurants to get to downtown

I couldn't tell you the last time I went downtown at night to party or even have dinner. I'm not scared of the riff raff, there's nothing down there that appeals to me.

I think if the apartments/condos weren't $1500+, people would live down there. I don't necessarily see it as people not WANTING to live down there, but moreso it is expensive unless you live with a bunch of roommates in an old place in Spanish Town.

They really screwed the pooch by enforcing the open container laws. They could have at least allowed it on 3rd street.
