So right now we have a conventional fridge/freezer in our kitchen, plus the POS fridge/freezer in the garage for beer, pop, and overflow frozen stuff. My father in law started sending us a lot of venison every year so we bought a mini-freezer for the overflow. It's not enough. I also like to make red sauce, gumbo, bean soup, all kinds of stuff like that. Whenever there is a thanksgiving, easter, Christmas, etc... with leftover meat, I make two huge pots - gumbo and bean soup. We also shop at Costco a lot.

Do you like your large freezer? WOuld you buy it again? If I do, I'll probably sell the mini-freezer on marketplace or give it to family.

We have a chest type freezer and like it very much. I used to hunt and that helped up keep the meat.
Now, we buy food in bulk and repack it in sizes and containers which work best for our needs.

I have a refridgerator in my kitchen with a freezer, when it goes out I'm getting an all in 1 refrigerator.

I have a 22 Cubic Ft stand up freezer in my utility room. On my porch I have a 13 cu ft freezer and an old refridgerator for beer, eater and any other overflow from my kitchen fridge.

Chest freezer in the garage and love it. Had a stand up one in the garage before and didn’t like it. All the cold air drops out of it when you open the door and garage heat makes it slower to recover imo. I couldn’t go without one because I like to make a bunch of extra food to store in it and I also rack up on meat sales.

This is good advice, thanks. I noticed they are about the same price on marketplace and the stand-up seemed bigger. Well you know bigger is better... But now I will go chest-style.

Thanks yall. Im not in a rush, maybe find one at an estate sale.

They each have their pros and cons. Parents have a stand up one in the basement, and while it can be easier to get stuff in and out of, it also is limited by the shelving and how you set that up. I've got an old chest freezer that was my grandparents, and you can store a ton in there, but you have to use baskets or something to keep it easy to get stuff out of the bottom. Also easy to forget what all is in there.

If you find at times you have extra space in there, I put a few gallon jugs with water in there to freeze. Once that is solid ice, if you do have an extended power outage, as long as you don't open it, it will give you several extra days without worrying about food thawing and spoiling. One of the drawbacks of buying in bulk or filling it with hunting/fishing meat is losing it all at once if you lose power.

We have a chest freezer and the frig/freezer from our first house in the garage. We have a chest freezer and 2 frig/freezers in the barn. We just bought a standup freezer for the garage after shooting a red deer and buying half a steer.

We only buy chicken at the store. All have temp sensors on them that text me if the temp get out of range.

I have a standup in my laundry room and could not do without it. I am wanting a chest freezer in my storage room for the reasons you mention. I cook for the freezer a lot, and buy bulk. I just bought half a beef and am at capacity.

My upright frost-free freezer is a 27 cu. ft. one and it is full between stuff from my garden, seafood, stocks, already prepared food and bulk food packed in smaller portions for use when needed.

I also have a large side by side in the kitchen and that freezer section is pretty stocked along with a smaller upright refrigerator/freezer with the small freezer on top that is loaded.

Personally, I'd never want a chest type freezer after having uprights all these years.

The upright does make it easier to see what you have and add/remove items. I like the chest for the reasons I put above but you do have to keep a catalog of whats in there and sometimes you have to dig down for what you need.

A trick you can also do is put a cup of water in there and let it freeze. Then put a penny or something on top and if it melts and refreezes you can tell.

The house we just moved into has an unfinished basement and a deep freezer was the first thing I bought. My dad is in south texas now, he and a buddy each killed a nilgai yesterday and he’s going to give me some meat to stash in my new freezer. Hopefully I can go next year and bag another.

Nilgai is the best wild game imo

Exactly. In power outages a chest will tolerate more open & close. For that reason, I have one of each (in addition to my side-by-side in kitchen. Can never have too many- just unplug if not needed.

We have two medium sized chest freezers, and they stay full. The wife bakes a lot and that takes up a good bit of room, the rest is cow and veggies and some fish.
