What is up with people thinking Gumbo isnt a soup? How have the faux Cajuns on baton rouge infiltrated so much that people think gumbo isnt a soup?

Its almost like the retards that think there is only one way to boil crawfish.

I've had gumbos that were definitely a stew. I've had ones that were definitely a soup. It is both, depending on how it is done.

I guess you are right...I treat my Gumbo more as a soup than a stew.

I believe both answers are correct.

Gumbo is too complex to simply label it a soup. It has many characteristics of soup and stew but it complicated.

It's like a soup with benefits.

It's much more a stew than a soup. Soups are thinner

This is done in many cultures and gumbo can be eaten without rice

It depends on how it is made.

Soup - the liquid broth is the focal point of the dish.
Stew - the non-liquid items are the focal point and is usually thicker

Something like Commander's or Mr. B's (just two i've had the most recently) i'd definitely consider soups.

ETA: This may not be universal and just coincidence with what i've had, seems chicken & sausage ones have been more in the stew realm and the seafood ones i've had have been more soup realm.
