LSUJML on the OT got me to seriously thinking in a similar thread, and google wasn’t much help, so I’m coming here to the experts to get your opinion. Do you consider dirty rice and rice dressing the same thing? Did my Cajun forefathers steer me wrong or maybe somehow misinterpret their cross-the-parish relatives? To me, they’re two distinct things, but I was curious as to what y’all think. Thanks in advance.

Tell the food board why this came up

Idk, maybe it’s more common than I thought, I’ve just never heard of it

We have always called it dirty rice in my family

It’s the same thing. People claim that dirty rice has the organ meat and rice dressing doesn’t. I doubt many people could tell the difference.

No they are not the same thing.

This is why they are not the same thing. True dirty rice has organ meat, rice dressing does not. Lots of rice dressings going around calling themselves dirty rice though LOL!

No. Rice dressing has no meat other than liver. Dirty rice has meat in it.

ETA: Apparently i have that backwards.

Anywho, here is my Rice Dressing recipe for all that cares. My grandma used to make it growing up and it's fantastic. This is pretty darn close.

Either way it's always better with livers/gizzards.

They are the same to me. I call it rice dressing

Basically a combination of rice, meats, and trinity. There are different versions of it- ground beef, pork, chicken livers, breakfast sausage- but its all in the same family.

Like gumbo- different variations but it's all gumbo.

That’s what I thought too

But the real question is do you add raisins to your rice dressing?

I agree. My family has always made a rice dressing with livers and gizzards included.

That's not rice dressing, that's rice pilaf.

They are the same to me. I've seen organ meat in both. Like many cajun dishes, there are many ways to make it.

I prefer cornbread dressing. And it better have the organ meat in it.
