And do they imply levels of processing?

Unculled, select, culled (medium, small), washed...IDK?

I think it was Yellowfin who brought this up at some point, but I can’t find the thread.

We have multiple sources for sacks, but if they’re not 1:1 in processing the cheaper one, $2.99/lb, may not be what we want.

Anyone know what the sack colors mean, if anything?

They might mean something to the fisherman but nothing uniform to the industry.

They mean nothing. We choose to separate landowners by color but that’s literally it.

I thought I’d seen a producer use colors to represent different grades...maybe I was wrong.

Thanks.

Easiest not to go to multiple places anyway.

Nothing. The color of the sack wherever you are buying them is the one you use. My dad always used purple. Last time I was home he had green. I asked and he said that’s the color they had that day.

No, I've had green and purple for selects from the same store. Probably just depends on the source.

i work for a place that sells them. The manager just told me that it depends on the buyer. Some will use them for grade. Purple would be #1, Green #2, Red and yellow #3. Others will buy the purple strictly because it looks better and makes the crawfish look bigger

That’s possible but there’s no standard. 20 years ago no one used purple sacks hardly (at our buyer). Now purple is like 80% of what goes to our wholesaler. No rhyme or reason. Whatever the seed store has in stock. On that note, haven’t seen the yellows in forever...

As stated by others, generally not. But some processors/wholesalers that mechanically grade at the plant, will use different colored sacks to differentiate graded sizes after crawfish pass through the grader and are re-sacked, but there is no uniform standard. Some larger crawfish farming operations with numerous ponds/fields might do the same when crawfish from harvested fields differ significantly in size - for example “peelers”, “field run”, “select”.

One farmer had some crawfish stolen from him. He told the Sheriffs office he was the only one in the area with yellow sacks. Sure enough they caught two guys on the side of the road trying to sale crawfish in yellow sacks. The color gave them away.

I got a yellow sack from Hanks last season.

It was the first time I had seen yellow and I grew up on crawfish fields. We always had purple or green.
