Crawfish Boil - Orange juice

I went to a crawfish boil yesterday outside of Austin. The man leading the boil poured a gallon of orange juice into the boiling pot. I've seen cut up oranges and lemons in crawfish boil, but never an actual gallon of juice?
Is this a norm in Louisiana?

Haha no. I've never seen that. I put a few oranges and a bunch of lemons in there. Never seen a gallon of OJ.
I've see. People dump beer in there, all kinds of stuff. Everyone has a thing they think works.

I've done it, you have to be careful not to put too much. just a different taste.

I add a can of concentrate to the pot.

I forgot about that, next time you start on a pre afternoon boil, I'll pour a couple of bottles of champagne in there and we can have some DeLoutre Chackbay mimosas.

I'm going to walgreens tomorrow for some champagne, they've got some of the good stuff marked down to 3.79 a bottle.

Do you really put champagne in a boil?

The alcohol makes the crawfish relax. Makes the meat more tender.

Do you really not put champagne in a boil?

Our neighbors brother does this. He has done several boils over here. Orange juice lemons and some habanero.
Another thing he does is keep the water or juice level low in the pot. No "rolling boil". The liquid is boiling but it boils and steams and sautées the crawfish. Very odd to see for the first time. First time he did it he made a STFU batch. Nobody was complaining about lack of spice.

No, we know how to boil crawfish here (well some of us do. There are those season the outside ice chest looneys)

I throw a gallon of OJ and 2 cans of of Budweiser in each batch. I find the OJ adds a slight sweetness.

I used a jug of ruby red grapefruit yesterday. Been doing it the last few times.
That and lemons and all the other usual suspect. It's a good flav.
