If we go with a strict definition of under the radar, i.e., something not many people know about it, what about some of those offerings from Burnt Hickory out of GA? R2R has endorsed some of them, but I seldom see any discussion about them on any of the online communities I browse.

This is a great IPA from Hops & Grain out of Austin. If you are in an area where you can get it, grab a 6 pack. If you are a fan of good balanced American IPA's like Yellow Rose, you'll love this stuff.

I think "under the radar" has to involve beers that don't get national acclaim but which have the potential to reach it.

So things from Sierra Nevada or New Belgium or Dale's or Cigar City... I mean... these are the definition of ON THE RADAR because everyone in the freaking country that knows anything about craft beer knows about those beers.

I mean, Jai Alai is the definition of On the radar as it's considered one of the best American IPAs in the country.

The problem, then, is that you're getting into really localized beers that people don't know about. And then it gets into just a pissing match of favorite local beers and whose beer region is better because those beers don't have wide enough distribution to really reach a broader market.

So yeah, Ozark Beer Company's APA. Completely Underrated and unknown.

But you also a lot of the bigger breweries offering become shelf turds because people overlook them (see SN hefe)

I am also really guilty of never buying import

for example Döllnitzer Ritterguts Gose is the bomb but i never buy it

Yes, when it comes to Dale's Pale Ale, SN Pale Ale, etc.

Or Terrapin Rye Pale Ale or Sweetwater 420.

That's why I agree that Terrapin's Hi-5 is under the radar because it is under the radar here in Georgia. Don't know how widely distributed it is.

Something like Creature Comforts Tropicalia, barely able to be had outside Athens and not distributed out of state, is definitely NOT under the radar. Same with GOAT or Ghost or whatever it is.

IMO, anyway.

This is a serious truth. Very good beer that even here in Georgia is under the radar.

You're right.

The Terrapin High-5 won a blind taste test by 3 distinguished mavens of this board..... shortly after the Sugar Bowl.

Name recognition alone disqualifies Terrapin products from being under the radar

I'll go ahead and respond to myself

Well that wasn't my intention but ok. I thought "under the radar" was "beers that people don't know about." Lots of people from LA visit Austin, so I don't see the problem.

In that case, there are maybe 5 beers in this whole thread that are under the radar?

In whatever lose definition I have in my head, a major brewery can produce an under the radar beer.

But I hear what you are saying.

At least we got back on track and away from "underrated."

That's why I described it as beers that are my fallback beers. I'm not disappointed when I drink them, but I usually don't order them because they are so widely available, and I know that I will eventually be in a place where that beer is the best option available. Boneyard's RPM is an example where I am. Every restaurant in Portland wants to appeal to craft beer drinkers, and they think they have reached the pinnacle of craft beer if they can get Boneyard's flagship beer on tap. To play on a quote by Yogi Berra, "RPM is so popular, nobody drinks it anymore..."

If they are good and widely available, then they will be well known and not "under the radar". I think a lot of good beers become shelf turds because they become so widely available that people overlook them when buying.

From Texas...

Real Ale White
Community Mosaic
Hops and Grain Mosaic
Hops and Grain Zoe
8th Wonder Rocketfuel
(512) Pecan Porter

Austin Beerworks has some really good rotating beers like Sputnik, Einhorn, and Heisenberg.

borderline ''widely available'', but I'd agree if it counts.

My vote goes to Real Ale Commissar. Get a bottle for less than you'd pay at the bar and it's flipping fantastic. It's also right under 10%

Since Lagunitas blew up the last couple years, Sucks has become less and less talked about and it is still a damn good beer. Obviously it is rated very high I just think it doesn't really get mentioned anymore in a lot of convos.

In NYC I really like Ithaca Flower Power in the "underrated" beers group.

Jai Alai is another good one. SW IPA if you can find it super fresh.

Not sure if anyone has said Full Sail yet, but i think that brewery as a whole is underrated and under the radar for having national distribution.

True...but I had to bend the rules to get a Houston beer on the list.
