Cooking Your Own Thanksgiving Meals or Subbing Out to the Store for a Heat and Eat Dinner

I am looking at prepping for a small family group. In the last few years after going out and purchasing what I need to cook and slave over the stove and oven for half a day, I end up spending well over 150-200 dollars or more to cook.
I noticed that one of my local grocery stores (not Rouses) is offering a 10-12lb turkey, 2 quarts of dressing, 2 quarts of peas, 2 quarts of baked macaroni casserole, rolls, and a pie all for 80 bucks. Should I hit that up or cook myself, it is sold cold so you still need to reheat it for an hour or 2. It sounds like a huge time saver.

If you don't care for the taste of your own cooking, go ahead and order out.
Also, Thanksgiving is much less about the meal and more about the people you share the day with.
It doesn't have to be the Turkey and fixings either. Not a thing wrong with a good gumbo or BBQ on that day.

I do a lot of the cooking for Thanksgiving. I can’t imagine several days with everyone who shows up if I didn’t have that excuse to avoid most of them.

My wife and I always do Thanksgiving just the two of us. It’s my favorite holiday of the year.
We are particular on our sides and desserts, and do a lot of cooking that day. But we outsource the turkey and buy a smoked turkey from a BBQ place in town that we love. Frankly the smoked turkey is better than anything we could do in the oven (no smoker in the city) and it frees up a ton of room in the oven for all the sides we make.
This week can’t go by fast enough. I’m ready to go into a food coma.

Whatever floats your boat. I would only sub the turkey out if I could buy it hot and fresh personally, like I think we got a fried turkey one year from the Lion's Club or something on T- Day.

Advice on peas.
Make a roux, add your onions and if you want bell peppers and celery, add your can of peas with the liquid and a can of chopped mushrooms after you've cooked your onions down. Let it cook on low and get the peas tender. After about an hour start mashing some of the peas against the side to thicken it up.
Put your peas on top your rice dressing.

Maybe freeze half the sides that you cook so you can heat and eat later on? When you get a hankering for dressing in April, just thaw out the tray and bake it up. I wouldn't want to sub out my family's dressing/stuffing for store bought. It's probably not that much different, but I enjoy making it every year.

I do not like the traditional food enough to buy it cooked. I only do it because of the tradition and I truly enjoy the whole morning with my family preparing the various items.

Only you can make that decision.

I suggested to the wife we buy the turkey cooked this year, to eliminate the hassle. That got shot down with quickness...

I prefer cooking myself. As someone else said, its a great excuse to get away from the bullshite.
The ones that irritate me are the ones who outsource everything and then still pass of how much effort they made to prepare the meal. "Warming" does not equal "cooking"! Don't try and grab the credit for something you didn't do

Same for us. We actually got engaged on Thanksgiving so it's extra special in recent years, which is why I enjoy spending it with just the 2 of us. I love to cook, and drinking wine and/or eggnog with my dude, kitty on my lap, while my house fills with delicious smells is my favorite thing.
We do a big family Christmas where we all get together, and I love my family but I'm not trying to do that twice in a month
Luckily, we have lived out of state for many years so we can use that as an excuse.
