Chimes-Don't get the love

I have been to Chimes for the last three weekends and while I enjoy it and will return, I don't understand the food kudos it receives.
Gumbo is fine, but nothing special. Same with the crawfish etouffe, the shrimp alfredo, and red beans and rice.
Service is typical college kids except at the bar where they lack any modicum of customer service.
Atmosphere is fun and loud.
I just don't understand why they get generally good reviews and a place like Walk Ons is consistently trashed.

I really don't get it either ... the chimes' food is far from the 5-star fare it is made out to be .. hats off to them for the wave they are on here ..

I've been noticing some items lacking in quality/consistency lately, but I'd still go there over Walk-On's any day.
The beer selection is one big reason, but I've also found a few menu items that are still as good as ever. Not 5-star fare, but when I'm paying under $10 for a Chimes club, I'm not expecting anything more than good bar food.

i think people expect too much from walk ons and for the most part give the chimes a hall pass because of their incredible beer selection ...

To be honest, every time I get dragged to Walk-On's... I find something to eat. And I drink some bud light or whatever domestic the people I'm with prefer. It just would never be my first choice of places to go around town or around campus.

They have other menu items

I would never consider the place gourmet and it isn't like it is a place I want to take my wife out for a nice meal, but it is pretty good for what it is. It is a glorified bar serving descent food. Good place to drink beer and watch sports while grabbing some grub.
I will admit that it has been 3 years since I have visited the place, but I think the food was much better than Walk Ons.

I haven't been there in years, but they used to have the finest wait staff possible. Some nights it would be the A squad and sometimes the B squad, but there was always quality abound. It was almost like they tried to hire one or two of each hot chick. Two asians, two blonds, tall chicks, short....It was glorious while I was in college. I lived behind it for 3 years (now parking lot) and stayed many a late night in there. I remember buying $6 Turbodog pitchers, but I can't tell you one thing I used to eat there (take that back, I'd get them to make me a poboy from the blacked alligator - don't know if I'd want to eat that now though).

The food is good.. Not bad. Its not going to win any awards..
Walk Ons is BAD. In three trips I havent had a dish I would ever want to order again.

The only thing I have ever had from there that was decent was the Blackened Chicken Club sandwich and it is just ok.

i never was huge fan of food at chimes.
Either the blackened salmon or crab cake sandwich is what I get.
Always solid.

I don't get how people ever complain about it. It's great bar food...especially for BR. What place in BR has better bar food? Great beer selection. Service isn't as good as it once was, but if you sit at the bar it's usually very good. Good atmosphere, plenty of TV's.
Walk On's food is pure garbage. I've eaten there plenty of times, and the food always ranks right below "suck." If Walk On's wasn't located in the shadows of Tiger Stadium, it would have died a long time ago. One of my biggest complaints about Walk On's is that Jack and Brandon are local guys, they know what good food is. Unfortunately, they also know they can trot out sub par product, and it won't matter.

I always enjoy going to The Chimes. I acknowledge the food isn't five star quality but I still enjoy it. I worked there for approximately four years in the early 2000s and maybe that's why I have a soft spot for it....you'd think it would have the opposite effect.
A couple Bloody Marys and either The Benediction or the Mediterranean for brunch is always money.

I was with a small group at the Chimes East the Friday night before the WVU game. We sat down about 7:10 or so, ordered a round of beers and app's. About 7:30 or so their computers went down for a little over an hour - and in that hour we were told they could not service us in anyway...NO food OR even take any drink orders. So for that period we just sat there.....no drinks....could not order food...did not see a mgr. walking around..nothing. I was pretty surprised by this considering the positive reputation The Chimes has. Once the computers were back up and running they processed everything for us - but at the end of the night I was pretty surprised we were not offered anything (free round, free app, discount on our meal, etc.) in return for the trouble.

I had some onion rings last night... not bad. Not my favorite. The boudin balls are slipping, though. They used to be one of my favorite appetizers, now I go for something else.
