I am not complaining. I am agreeing it is bar food. Great? Don't know about that.

I like the place. I will go back often, but the food is not the draw.

Should never have mentioned Walk Ons. Skewed the whole thread.

I think most people take The Chimes for what it is. A fun place to hang out. Good Apps, cheap oysters, fairly priced beer and lots of it. They have a few pretty damn good items on the menu, but I very rarely hear anybody over the age of 20 suggest this place for a really good meal in BR. Good place to hit up for happy hour after work and grab an app or two. My friends and I generally order 4-5 apps and just split those if we're hanging out there. Definitely the way to go.
They do a very good brunch as well for the price.

dont try to make the place something its not - its a good place to grab a beer, especially if you like to drink something outside of the miller, coors, bud family and even more so if you like to drink draft. their seafood is on par with most other establishments in BR and their apps are always good and i think their gumbos and soups are better than a large percentage of places in BR. Its a place to reminisce, grab a beer, and get some decent south LA bar food for under $20. Period

Their beer is cold and a good selection. Food is just OK. But I go all the time because I like the atmosphere at the bar. Can't wait for the oysters to come back.

I had some onion rings last night... not bad. Not my favorite. The boudin balls are slipping, though. They used to be one of my favorite appetizers, now I go for something else.

Yes, I've noticed their boudin balls are not as good as they used to be. Their fried mozzarella isn't the same either...used to be as good as Sammy's. Also, they no longer have fried or sauteed crab claws.

My favorite soups they have(seldom have em) are tomato basil and the alligator sauce piquante

Hmmm, we had a crab claws appetizer last night. Same one they've always done in the garlic-butter sauce.

The fried cheese is different for sure... still good and better than most places, but not like it used to be.

My bad. You're right. They still do have them...not sure what I was thinking.

Now I'm wanting Chimes for lunch.

Four of us went there on Friday night for some beer and ended up all getting apps. Had the boudin balls, fried cheese, cheese fries and crab cakes. All were very good. If the regular menu items are as good as the apps I don't know what you would have to complain about. For what it is the food seems pretty damn good.

I'd offer to meet you there, but I went last night... and you'd probably bail on me. ;-)

First. Biggest exaggeration in the history of the food and drink board.

Second. Who is complaining?

I don't understand the mad love for Chimes either. If the place wasn't so conveniently located, I would have never even heard of it. I havent eaten enough at Walk Ons to say that it is any better or worse, but I would be curious to see what percentage of their food is squirted right out of a bag into a saute pan and heated to be served. How hard is it for a restaurant to actually cook food these days? It seems that very few places in BR do this.

The waitstaff at Chimes these days ain't much to look at either.

Yeah it's an obvious exaggeration, but still a ton of complaining on here. Chimes is a cool bar with good food. Not sure what everyone is hoping for. Lots of good choices and they do a lot of it well.

Your love for all things BR is irrational. Go back to the rant.

Yep. The food isn't going to blow your socks off, but it's all made from scratch and they use local ingredients. It's Tony's inspired food, but you're not paying more than 14 bucks for anything on the menu. Not sure why anybody would expect greatness for that price.

I've been the chimes with you and you enjoy it as well. You're just stirring shite.
