Surprised to still see this thread on the first page!

So after our plane didn't leave out of atlanta for 5 hours after it was scheduled because of fog in Chicago, it pretty much blew up my plans for the day and there was just time to go eat at Swift and Sons. It was incredible.

Followed by breakfast in Moline at QC Coffee and Pancake House!

I was excited about my trip to Bavette's last night and wanted to share

In addition to the amazing food, I fricking love the look of that place. It's like you're stepping into a 1920's steakhouse. Not a great picture, but you get the idea.

I've lived here for 15 years and its one of the best meals I've ever had. Steak tartare, oysters, goat cheese, Brussels sprouts, truffle Mac, filets and the best strip I've ever had, two amazing bottles of wine.
Lawyer buddy decided to expense it, so not a bad night. I would recommend to anyone visiting Chicago that can get in there.

So I am doing a search on the board for Chicago-related stuff to see if there is anything I've missed.

A few things:

1. The one time I've been to Swift and Sons, I and my crew were so blacked out I am fairly certain at least half the crew were asleep at the table (in evening suits, mind you). I love Bavette's with all my heart.

2. Kosmo had me going, and I was about to respond with some angry and hate-filled spew.

3. I would put Monteverde over almost any other Italian posted in the thread. I've been there four or five times at this point, and it genuinely is probably the one place that gets better every single time I visit it. It is top four or five in all Chicago for me at this point.

4. How are Avec and Blackbird not mentioned at least once in this thread?

5. Grace closing gave us a slight hit as far as super top tier, high end places go. Oriole seems to be the prime contender to jump up and snag that second place after Alinea, but that Alinea mafia are starting to stake out and claim their territory like lions all over the city.

6. Speaking of the Alinea mafia, Roister is probably my #1 restaurant in the whole city right now. Also surprised I haven't seen it mentioned yet. It is home to the best meal I've ever had in Chicago no questions asked.

7. Butcher and the Burger is highly, highly underrated as far as top-quality burgers go in the city. I love Au Cheval as much as the next guy (their sides really are the best anywhere), but I think B&B does as good of a patty as Au Cheval does.

8. I think Texans and Californians would generally be surprised by how good the Mexican is generally in Chicago. Having 1/3 of your city be Hispanic is a good engine for great Mexican from all over the country. You just have to get out of the North Side and Downtown for the really quality stuff (or go to Rick Bayless' spots).

Chicago is a sports city. Everything here revolves around it including the food. Hot dogs, pizza, italian beef, bar food reigns supreme.
Not only that, but most of the best places to eat are in the downtown areas of the surrounding suburbs anyways.

People go to Chicago to eat deep dish, italian beef, and hot dogs.

The suburbs is where it's at for everything else.

Just curious, was it a pretty loud place?

Upstairs in the a la carte section is pretty loud.

Absolutely no issue at all downstairs for the pre fixe. We were bullshitting with the chefs and everything.

ETA: Didn't mean to come across as douchey in that answer if anyone got that vibe. The pre fixe probably comes out to about the same as the a la carte when taking everything together, and we were there for a special occasion. It is seriously worth your extra $20 or $30 up front to do the pre fixe downstairs because you'll end up spending something like that anyway upstairs, and it comes without any of the noise and hassle. A good friend of mine knows food, restaurants, and the industry in general as well as anyone I've ever met, and he and I both independently came to the conclusion that Roister was easily the best restaurant experience dollar-for-dollar in the city at the moment.

I have reservations at Elske on Thursday and I'm really looking forward to it...

Also, I really enjoyed Pacific Standard Time a few weeks back..

I haven't been to Elske yet, though I love both Blackbird and Publican. From what my buddies told me, they got off to a bit rougher start than anticipated but then really hit their stride late last year. Supposedly the atmosphere as good as anywhere you'll ever go.

Also haven't been to PST yet, but I am curious about it. A lot of people around here really love Nico Osteria, and I have never been crazy about it. Not going to lie - the menu looks good but not something I would go out of my way and spend a fortune on.

La Scarola

This tells me that you really know Chicago from personal experience - not just from reading national publications.

I lived in Chicago 30 years, moved away nine years ago.

The food from there I think about most is the Italian beef, juicy, hot oil only, from Johnnie's Beef in Elmwood Park.

But the restaurant I think about most is La Scarola. How I would love to taste their Shrimp Armani, Pasta e Fagioli, escarole (of course), Pasta Lorenzo, and Vitello di Franco again.
