Four of us are heading up to an event a few hours outside of Chicago, but we are going to spend one night in the city. Looks like we will fly in early enough to find a good place for lunch and again for dinner. Any suggestions for some real deal Chicago food? Something you can't find anywhere else. Probably a steakhouse for dinner, hopefully old school Chicago, but most of what I'm finding are just some of the nicer chains. TIA!

Depends on your budget.

Alinea and Girl and the Goat are no brainers IMO.

Bavette's for steak.

Pequod's for lunch pizza.

I don't know how far out they are from this trip. The OP didn't specify. I assume he is capable of calling a restaurant and seeing if there are open reservations.

Also, people are right to laugh at the OP for this statement:

- My three favorite spots for a steak are Swift & Sons, Bavette's, and Kinzie.

- Favorite pizza is Lou Malnati, Pequod's, Art of Pizza, and Coalfire.

- Favorite burgers are at Au Cheval, DryHop, and The Bad Apple.

- Favorite sushi is Kai Zan, sushiDOKKU, Momotaro, and Seadog

- Best Italian I've had is La Scarola, Piccolo Sogno, Formento's, Rosebud, and Monteverde. Can't go wrong with any.

- Favorite Asian is Serai, Go 4 Food, and Andy's Thai Kitchen.

- Other spots that are, absolutely, worth checking out: Girl & The Goat, Publican or Publican Anker, Fulton Market Kitchen, Acadia, 90 Miles, Mott St, Parachute, Purple Pig, Tango Sur, Duck Duck Goat, Irazu, Ema, and Oriole (had it for first time last month)

ETA: Saw Purple Pig in this thread, and I listed it, too, but I would probably avoid it during the lunch hour. It's not even a safe bet that you would get seated soon at dinner, either. Plenty of other great spots to check out that aren't along a tourist stretch.

I took hoopsgalore (and others) advice when I went up there for the ND game this fall and found some good spots. As far as pizza goes, our first stop was Pequod's which to be very honest was good (obviously, it's hard to frick up pizza) but I thought it was maybe a bit overrated compared to it's reputation. Not the case with Lou Malnati's which I thought was fantastic. Worth every minute of the wait (you gotta wait if you didn't know that about deep dish, probably about 45 minutes after placing the order) but oh my is it good.

Book if it's there, obviously, but I've been several times and always find it easier to reserve closer (one week to a few days) to the desired dining date. Couples and groups book so far ahead that, inevitably, plans change and tables open as the day approaches.

Girl and the goat- fantastic. Just great food. We shared 5 plates and all of them were delicious

Pequods. The burnt cheese on the crust sets it apart

Au cheval- top 2 or 3 burger I’ve ever had

Hoops,

Have you ever eaten at Sabatino's on W. Irving Park ? My 92 yr old great aunt loves that place as it's our usual "go to" spot for Italian. Her husband Joe (RIP) was from Sicily and they settled in Belmont Terrace near Schiller Woods South in the 1950's. She still lives in the same house and quaint little neighborhood in the 'burbs

Well done. Most of the places I would have recommended are on your list.

For steak, while I haven't eaten there, many people say RPM Steak is their favorite steak place in the city.

Thanks guys, y'all rock! We ended up getting a reservation for Swift and Sons. Can't wait. (And yes, plenty of places were already booked for when we are going)

Thanks for the heads up on the deep dish taking a while. I'd love the full experience, but don't think we'll have the time. Are there any places that have deep dish ready to eat that are worth giving a try?
