What is its purpose on this planet?

Sometimes I make a pot of decaf in the evening. I love evening coffee, but I want to sleep as well. It has a purpose.

My father-in-law loves coffee, but after diabetes hit the caffeine affected his blood sugar level.
He quit coffee for a while, but now he chugs decaff all day long.
The blood sugar thing sounded like BS when I first heard it, but the Mayo Clinic says it's true:

Some studies suggest that drinking coffee, caffeinated and decaffeinated, may actually reduce your risk of developing diabetes.
If you already have diabetes, however, the impact of caffeine on insulin action may be associated with higher or lower blood sugar levels. For some people with diabetes, about 200 milligrams of caffeine — or the equivalent of one to two 8-ounce cups (237 to 474 milliliters) of plain, brewed coffee — may cause this effect.

Have you tried bourbon?

I was going to say wine. But I like your thinking also.

So you can pour it into a clear glass cup and still be able to read your newspaper through it.
Or you want to fake people out and make them thing you're drinking hot tea.

You’re one of those people who drinks shite coffee and therefore thinks all coffee tastes terrible, aren’t you?

Umm. No. I drink coffee black because I like the taste of coffee.
However, I also drink it for the caffeine and for starting the day.

shite I can drink a whole pot right before bed and it won't affect anything.
Mainly because I sleep like shite regardless.

My wife has a minor health condition that caffeine exasperates, so she drinks decaf. She'll sometimes do a cup of half decaf, half regular.
That's about the only use for it that I see.

Then you answered your own question. They drink it because they like the taste but don’t want the effect of caffeine.

I love bourbon; however, bourbon never fails to wake me up at 3:00 A.M. Decaf coffee, on the other hand, has me sleeping like a baby.

When I quit smoking, I quit drinking coffee, alcohol, and cokes/tea. It was an association deal. If I was drinking one of those things, I'd crave a smoke too. So, I quit all of those things.
After a period of time (around 6 weeks), I started picking those things back up as my confidence grew in my ability to stay quit. I'll never forget my first cup of regular coffee after having quit: I thought I was going to die! My head was pounding, I couldn't think straight, and my heart was racing. To this day, I can tell you in three sips or less whether the coffee is regular or decaf.
I drink decaf every morning. I love the taste of coffee. My current blend at the house is actually 1/2 caff. I blend Community Coffee decaf with Cafe Du Monde's roast with chicory. I can't have more than two cups of this or I'll get jittery.

One of my greatest pleasures is a good cup of coffee after a nice meal at a fancy restaurant.
I could Imagine if you’re sensitive to cafffeine wanting this pleasure and not wanting to be away for the next 6 hours.
Also, I cant shite in the morning without a cup. Idk if decaf has that same effect but if it does another reason.

because some people like the taste of coffee, but don't want the caffeine.
I hate the taste and the caffeine, so I don't drink coffee in any form.

I really don't understand that because Heineken is terrible. Why would you want the crap flavor without the alcohol?
