Buying salmon in NOLA

My doctor wants me to eat more oily fish such as salmon. While I have eaten salmon a number of times, I have never bought it and cooked it at home.

Where are sone good places to get it to cook at home? I see it at Sams. Sometimes I see it at grocery stores but I’ve always been hesitant about grocery seafood. Do any local seafood markets sell it? I know it’s not a local fish.

I found a couple of air fryer recipes to try, but if anyone has any they want to share, that would be great!

Salmon is pretty easy to cook and there's an almost limitless number of ways to flavor/season it.

I tend to prefer a sesame soy ginger or a vanilla cinnamon marinade for salmon. It’s pretty easy to cook and not mess up.

When in the mood for salmon, I will get mine from the Costco located on Carrollton Ave. near Tulane. They have a large selection of both farm raised and wild caught with as good a price as you can find anywhere in the city.


I should have also added that Rouses, Winn-Dixie, Robert's also have salmon since I do occasionally shop those stores too.

Whole Foods will probably be your best bet. I don't know that I've ever really seen it in "local seafood markets."

I actually prefer to eat salmon raw but will occasionally break out a pan, add just a touch of olive oil to it while it heats up and lightly salt and pepper a salmon filet and sear it in the pan just enough to put a bit of crust on the outside while the inside is cooked no more than medium rare. While it cooks I like to drizzle a bit of fresh lemon juice on the fish as it cooks.

It takes no more than a couple minutes to cook it the way I like, so not a lot of cook time and cleanup is a snap. Beats the hell out of cleaning out an air fryer for sure.

Oh, they'll have it but will somehow manage to hang a sign claiming "Free Range/Organic" on it so they can charge $9 a lb. more than most other stores.

You're right about the local seafood markets, they tend to not carry stuff that is brought in from out of state in most cases.

Not arguing that, but costcos farm raised is the best tasting for me and has won several awards for the same , even when compared to wild caught

Sam’s salmon is very good. I buy skin on and grill it to at most medium rare. If you overcook it to me it gets fishy. There is no Costco near me so Sams is it.

I will only buy skin on filets since I like to brine it and then cold smoke it a lot of the time. If I just decide to cook it or cut it up to eat raw, I'll just filet off the skin. and process it like I want.

I buy Salmon from Costco and Whole Foods in N.O.

Lately have been cubing it, tossing with Bachans BBQ, and airfrying.

Easy to bake as well.

I was speaking more to the OP who's Dr told him to eat salmon for health reasons.

I lived on Kodiak Island, AK for 2 summers, so am an admittedly self-aware salmon snob, but my input:

- only wild-caught, Pacific Ocean salmon for us
- raw is my favorite way to eat salmon, but only if exceedingly fresh (preferably never frozen, but this is not realistically available to most consumers)
- NEVER overcook salmon; IMO it should not flake all the way through the filet.
- cedar-planked and grilled is my favorite preparation if cooked
- salmon is amenable to many marinades, basted, pastes (I like a fresh pesto coating while planked)
- we also routinely eat smoked salmon with traditional accoutrements with chilled vodka is nice

McCord’s on vets by 17th st canal usually has fresh Ora king salmon.

I get mine usually at Fresh Market.

Soak a Cedar or Alder wood plank for at least an hour in water.

I drizzle a bit of olive oil on top and rub it with a bit of Paul Prudomme's Fish Magic, and minced garlic. Next, top it with fresh dill. Lastly, I put a few thin lemon slices on top.

Place it on the plank and grill on medium heat for 15-20 minutes.

I like mine less cooked, for sure.

Always a hit.
