Food board! Hoping someone here knows a place to obtain beef bones (soup bone) for cheap or free. Been making broth with store bought bones $3.49/lbs and that is actually cheap. I have called all supermarkets and Cajun meat shops- no one gives them out to my knowledge and avg price is $4.99/lbs.

TIA

You aren’t getting them for free anywhere I reckon

Where are you located ?

Call your local slaughterhouse... Kirk Martins (N. Laffy) or Hebert’s (Abbeville) can possibly help you out. I wouldn’t expect anything for free especially since there’s a market for bones

I am in Denham Springs.

Yeah, not thinking free is realistic... 2 butchers I talked to said in the past 3 years they went from giving them to pet owners for a dog treat to increasing the price a few times a year.

I used to get mine from Hi-Nabor on Jones Creek in Baton Rouge.

I'd also try the Asian markets on Florida Blvd. between Sherwood and Flannery. They use bones to make Pho.

I cut up bones from chickens, lamb, pork, and beef with a hedge clipper and freeze until I have enough to pack in the pressure cooker to make a couple gallons or so of bone broth. Then strain, cool, and freeze in Qt bags.

I’ve never seen them anywhere for free. Call some butchers or Cajun meat joints.

I remember at one time getting all the bones you wanted for free, but that was decades ago.

Also, most supermarkets no longer get sides of beef to part out like they did in the old days. The stuff comes already parted out from the big processing houses and they just cut some of it down to size for individual sales.

The last time I got beef bones for making a beef stock, it was $1 a lb. for them and the guy only had something like 5 lbs. of bones saved at the time.

Do you also eat beef? If so, just start buying half or quarters from a farmer.

This is what I do, and I get lots of bones
