Not a fan of saigon noodles at all, i found the star anise and other spices to be too over powering and masked the flavor of the bone broth.
Little saigon and dangs are 1a and 1b for me.

That's good to know. I only ever get vermicelli bowls at Viet places and I was never a fan of pho because I thought it tasted like licorice. Have never been able to get the obsession... but the only place I've had it is Saigon Noodles. So maybe I should try elsewhere.

I find it to be ok. Very convenient for me as well to where I work. Love going there on cold days for the #20.

Yeah, standard pho shouldn't taste anything like licorice, so give it another go

If it tastes like licorice, they're using too much star anise.

I will give you a tip that is pho damn sho gonna have you come back and thank me.
The brisket pho at Ava's Street Café on Essen (adjacent to Bennys Car Wash).
I crave it whenever I come to Baton Rouge. I talked to the chef about the awesome broth and he told me how he boils it and so on and so forth. If all the dish was was broth, I'd still like it. But add the brisket that POPS and you have a hell of a dish. And they aren't stingy with the meat.
Back to that broth... I usually like spicy food, but I almost never add anything to the broth, because it is the perfect flavor with a hint of spicy heat. But I do throw the jalapeno slices in the bowl with the bean sprouts. Good stuff.
What are those garnish leaves, anyway? Is that some kind of Asian basil mint leaf? Quite tasty!

This topic is worthy of a sticky, and I am fascinated by the large variety of different answers

In my experience, it’s usually Thai basil. Actually grows like a fricking weed down here. Far less bitchy than sweet basil.

Ava is garbage compared to Dang's, Viet Garden, & Little Saigon. The only ones who recommend anything other than the Florida Blvd places are the ones who have never been to any of the Florida Blvd places.

No, sorry, but you are wrong. You are entitled to your opinion, as is everyone who is wrong, but yea... you are wrong. No sentence that includes "garbage" and "Ava's" would be accurate, unless you were referring to some late-night trip by Ava's employees to their dumpster.
But, in the spirit of broadening my horizons, I will head to the ones you recommended too. But I have had Pho all over North America and a few places in Asia, and I know my Pho! And the five people I have taken to Ava's to try the brisket pho, all agreed that it was fuggin' GOOD!!!

It's hearty soup, of course it's going to be good. With this perfect weather we've been having I'll probably head over to Boa and have some pho in the courtyard.

Download the Waitr app and look at Dangs menu on there. Waitr is a delivery app but they have a photographer go out and take professional pictures of the menu items at their restaurants, which is really helpful for ethnic places where you’re unfamiliar with the food.
Dangs has a lot of photos on theirs.
