I'm taking the wife to the city for her birthday and she wants Italian. I'm looking for something close to downtown or Uptown, white table cloth, nice atmosphere.

Cafe Giovanni has opera singers like 2 nights a week I think.

Vincent's was our favorite when we lived uptown. It's been years since I've been to Maximos and I've never had Domenica.

Are you talking Italy Italian, or red gravy/Italio-creole or Italian American? Cause that's three diff recs.

If you're looking more red sauced Italian like Vincent's, Marcello's is fantastic. I know a few other posters here have raved about it in the past as well.

Last time I went the meatball was almost frozen. But overall I used to like the place.

I'm still a big fan of Pascal's Manale but it's not quite fine dining. Maybe a place like Tommy's on Tchoupitoulas would be better for what you're looking for.

I've been to Red Gravy twice and that place has been awesome both times.

Is that place frowned upon here?
