I always went for the kind of place where you could get coffee OR drinks OR dinner OR just tapas...

Had a friend that always went to fondue place because there is lots of action and movement, rather than just two people staring at each other.

Or Maple Street Cafe is next door, if that is crowded. There's lots of good little cafes in that area. And then several coffee shops you could walk to if dinner isn't long enough.

There is one in NOLA, but this is a terribly risky idea for a first date. If you run out of things to talk about after an hour and a half at the restaurant, you are only half through.

"Oh, you like your lobster boiled 75 seconds? I'm more of an 82-second kind of guy myself."
"..."
"..."
"More wine?"
"Yes, please."

these are really good choice because the food is solid at each, and the prices are good for the food you get, plus each are close to bars, but not in a touristy area, so you can have a well rounded date.

I wouldn't go to a place to Spend $100+ on a first date.

Mikimoto, Five Happiness, La Thai (haters gonna hate that I'm not naming a Bestbank Thai restaurant but it's a nice atmosphere for a first date, it's in Nola, and it's reasonably priced), Toups Meatery, Crescent Pie and Sausage. I would add Mondo to the list but it's so damn noisy in there that it would be hard to carry on a conversation for a first date.

Ye Olde College Inn
Katie's in Mid City
Sukho Thai or La Tahi
Mat and Naddie's
Dick and Jenny's
Atchafalaya

ETA: I'd suggest Magasin, but their seating arrangements can be a little awkward and uncomfortable at times. I wouldn't risk it.

I have to agree with Cafe Degas also.

ONE Restaurant is another option.

I would also suggest Lola's in that area. Split a few bottles of Sangria, get lucky on the first date. Though I would avoid the garlic soup if you think this date is going in that direction.

They use a lot of garlic there in general.

Still good though.
