Giamanco’s

Loved that place.

That was another family that lived around the corner from me growing up. My father would get me out of school to go eat oysters at their oyster bar which he preferred over Phil’s. Had the glass dessert display case at the hostess stand and my mother would be bent over it with her hands clasped in front of her like she was shopping at Tiffany’s.

Giamanco’s was one of those Italian family owned restaurants that did spaghetti and meatballs and fried shrimp with equal enthusiasm. Man they were good. Cold beer, Chianti in the wicker bottles, hot pepper vinegar sauce on the table and the butter pats for the saltines AND captains wafers we all fought over was always soft. Great oysters and always had a really good stuffed flounder broiled.

I miss it too-grew up eating there and my wife and I continued that until they closed.

His brother or one of his brothers owned Suburban Gardens Restaurant in Alexandria and it was almost an identical menu. It closed a few years ago too. Shame. I’m sure some on here remember it.

ETA old Giamanco’s menu

Mickey’s Gold Nugget
Chalet Brandt
Dajonel’s
Jack Sabin’s
Ruby’s
Giamanco’s
The ORIGINAL Village and Ralph & Kackoo’s

Good list; others I would add:

Macy's (chef went to City Cafe, when Stabler opened)
Cipriani's
Taste of Asia
Someone mentioned Wesley's (was this the pizza place in the Broadmoor shopping center?) If so, this!
Brandt's Maisonette
There was a seafood restaurant on Constitution back in the late 80's(?), on the right hand side (the place was an ex-club and had a really strange layout), they had excellent fish dishes.
Ground Patti on Ardenwood, back when the Mall was Bon Marche.
Outside BR- Laffite's Landing on the River Road ($0.10 oysters and $0.25 draft on Tuesday or Wednesday)

Many others that have been mentioned

What in the actual frick are those prices? Is inflation really that bad? My grandma always used to talk to me about how food was getting insanely expensive and $10 used to be able to buy you a nice dinner but I thought she was exaggerating.

I say this in all seriouness, I would cut off one of my fingers for prices to go back to $5 for a steak and baked potato at a good restaurant

Del Lago, circa mid 1970s-late 1980s, Owner Linda(and Mike) Merriam's recipes, and many talented BR chefs passed through here.

All the rock stars and celebs dined here when in town, and not just due to proxy to Hilton and Sheraton. Was BR's own lil Studio 54 & Copacabana in a redneck oil town. Rod Stewart, Gene Simmons, etc..were genuinely impressed that this shtkicker town had such a hip club/restaurant.

Del Lago is in the top 5 to 10 BR has ever had in dining, and hands down #1 in chic club lore, Sat Night Fever to Roxy Music era.

I worked for Larry on Wiltz one year. He was CIA-Hyde Park trained, and had put in a long stint under Charles Brandt(European/Swiss trained)..

A great chef, that like Phillipe Parola or Joey Distefano, was very talented in the kitchen, but between the biz side, decisions, and/or BR Warholian 15 fickleness, just couldn't make the magic last longterm.

Danvers

Was on Florida Blvd. I would tear up their Roast Beef sandwiches and fries. There was an Apple turnover too.

What was the name of the Pizza place in Cortana Mall that sold by the slice?

I agree with you on what Del Lago was in regards to being a club but Baton Rouge has never been nor will it ever be a “redneck oil town.” That’s the most inaccurate description I’ve ever heard especially in regards to that timeframe of the mid 70’s.

Didee's was another restaurant that was visited by celebs. It was famous for it's duck. Elvis ate there.

Anyone else remember LaNormandie? Off Florida between Ardenwood and Lobdell. Ate there several times in their heyday.

I thought he was more just speaking as to perception of outsiders coming to town, especially rock stars and such. Likely quite accurate in that regard.

I loved the old Giamancos menu, btw.

Sort of remember the name, but I can't recall the location. Probably ate there, though. While searching google, I saw the obit for Jean French, the owner. He passed away Dec. 3rd, 2020. He's another that started at Chalet Brandt.
