I agree with the rye folks on here, I typically use Templeton Rye for my OF’s
Also see if you can find a jar of the Luxardo cherries, they are expensive but well worth it.

Flemings makes a really good Old-Fashioned and they use Templeton Rye. That's a great choice.

yall are goona laugh but i have been making old fashioneds for years and my grandfather was a bartender in the 50's for a while after the war and he swore by this.
The best bourbon for old fashioneds is Old Charter.
an Old fashioned is the original cocktail. Before it got its name you would order it buy saying "I want a cocktail, made the Old fashioned way". and voila, its name.
And the"new" way bars are making it is terrible, you shoudnt never muddle a orange slice and the cherries. It pisses me off when i get it like that. Muddle the flamed orange peal in the sugar cube, water, and bitters. Ice then bourbon, and garnish with the cherries.
This is how you make a Old Fashioned. YouTube

The Old Charter you used to buy isn't the same as the Old Charter today. Today it is aged 8 seasons.

The new way I've seen some places making it is with club soda. It is absolutely horrendous and there is no place for club soda in an old fashioned. Some of these places are decent restaurants also so this really was disappointing.

Was in Fort Worth this weekend and had a great Old Fashion made with TX Whiskey and walnut bitters. Was tasty.

Personally I like Maker’s or something like Old Charter as already mentioned. Eagle Rare, Basil’s and bourbons in that tier are something I am only drinking over ice.

There is probably more myth surrounding cocktails than all religions of world history combined. But an Old Fashioned was not the original cocktail. Of course that depends on how one defines cocktail. Some research and scholarly writing out recently and more than likely first “cocktail” was more like a rum daiquiri variant.
Tangent if interested, there was a really good David Wondrich podcast debunking the popular creation story surrounding the Sazerac. Hope no one sends it to Reagan from Southern Charm.

I'm partial to Evan Williams Single Barrel.
