Usually the rye content. Although proof and age can add to the effect.

Yep, you definitely want a rye whiskey and not a typical bourbon. Regular bourbon doesn't cut the sweet components enough and makes the drink to cloyingly sweet.

The only other two ive tried it with is rebecca creek and gentleman jack. I prefer creek on the rocks, rather than in an old fashioned

It was not dark rye, that stuff looks much darker than the basil haydens i had

Probably a bourbon like this. I mention prior as its terrific rye. Basil in general makes easy to drink bottles
