Usually the rye content. Although proof and age can add to the effect.

I like those and Woodford Reserve.

Yep, you definitely want a rye whiskey and not a typical bourbon. Regular bourbon doesn't cut the sweet components enough and makes the drink to cloyingly sweet.

The only other two ive tried it with is rebecca creek and gentleman jack. I prefer creek on the rocks, rather than in an old fashioned

Gotta have the spice kick from the rye for sure

Another one I like is Basil Hayden dark rye for an OF

I like Basil Hayden, never used in it in a old fashion though.

It was not dark rye, that stuff looks much darker than the basil haydens i had

Probably a bourbon like this. I mention prior as its terrific rye. Basil in general makes easy to drink bottles

Yes, thats what it was, what do you think Knob creek?
Posted on 9/21/18 at 8:22 pm to t00f
I have been wanting to try that, also Whistlepig.

WP 10 is one of my goto’s. Either straight with a touch of water or a round cube.

Just means the year, 10 year. And the least expensive from them.
Posted on 9/21/18 at 8:34 pm to t00f
I will definitely give it a try
