Yup. Half the shite on the shelves these days are made in one place and then a company buys a recipe... If your lucky they barrel and age it some themselves... A good bit don't and are just marketing people lying to you.
Example: the bartender this weekend asking if I wanted to try michters... Told him nope.. not paying premium prices for a label on a bottle.
Bulliet makes their own, but does not make their Rye yet.

Really like Basil's for that price range. Eagle Rare is good but not on the same level.

Knob creek, eagle rare, basil Hayden and bulliet.
Those are actually distilled, barreled and bottled by their companies.
Unless I missed something and Bulliet started distilling their own juice, nope. Not Bulliet. It is owned by Diageo, and use to be made by Four Roses. As for who makes it now, I have no clue.

Am I a complete weirdo for thinking Bulleit isn't on the same level as the others mentioned in this thread? Something about it is slightly off-putting to me.

Also, don't be so quick to write off all non distiller producers out there. Both High West and Smooth Ambler are using sourced whiskey while their own distillate ages, and they are putting out some great stuff. The difference is that they, unlike Bulliet, are fairly open about where they get their whiskey from.

I've never been a fan of it myself.

Your correct... I put bulliet... Meant 4 roses.
However, the bulleit whiskey is not made by the big conglomerate over in Indiana like most. Their rye yes... But not their regular product... Not sure who actually makes it though.

Im a Maker's fan also.
But the Makers 46 is not as good, only more expensive in a money making marketing stunt.
Unlike Jack, where Gentlemen Jack is better.

I thought Old Grand-Dad 114 was pretty darn good
Picked this up for $22 this weekend. All I could taste was the alcohol.
True, the 114 is too harsh, but if you can find the bottled in bond proof, it's a real treat.

Eagle Rare is good, Angel Envy IS better IMHO might be a tad higher.,
WL WELLER IS LIKE $19 and better than most but does not carry the brag name,

Seconding Basil Hayden. Especially in the summer, since it's light and spicy.

From a 2014 blog-no idea if accurate:
quote:
The Bulleit 10 in stores now is bourbon made by Four Roses. That will be true for at least the next nine years. Likewise the standard Bulleit Bourbon will be Four Roses for at least the next four or five years. I don't know exactly when Four Roses stopped selling new make to Diageo but I'm confident it was within the last two years. That means the soonest Bulleit 10 could be other than Four Roses is 2022.

Willet is smooth and the bottle is interesting for a gift. $33 at Aquistipace. Basil Hayden is a well known solid pick at that price point.

well this is one instance where you are wrong.... michters is not like most NDPs
and Diagio has begun distilling it's own Bulliet, but as another poster said, it will be years before that makes it into a bottle.

I'm giving a few gifts out. What's your favorite bourbon around $30-35?
There have been quite a few great suggestions so far. I especially like the Eagle Rare 10 and Elijah Craig suggestions. Another one that is great and falls in the price category is Four Roses Small Batch.
But if I want to spend $35 on a bottle of bourbon to give as a gift I am going with EH Taylor Small Batch. I have seen it go from $32.99 right up to $40 but pound for pound that is the best bottle of bourbon that you are going to get in that price range. And it comes in a sweet tube which is perfect for gift giving.

Awful day at work today. Decided to hit this hard tonight.
