Best Baton Rouge Restaurants of 2016

I'm omitting the ones that are considered fine-dining, such as Ruth's Chris, Ruffino's, Sullivan's, Madison Lacour, and Juban's; and will focus on the other tier of restaurants.
Now I haven't eaten at every BR restaurant in 2016, but these are the ones I frequented that left an impression on me and I wanted to bring attention to them.
I highly recommend everyone who is local to visit these places and try them for yourselves, and also provide your own suggestions.
Honorable Mentions - Bay Leaf, Chimes East, & Zea
5. Little Saigon/Dang's - I feel for Vietnamese you can't go wrong with either of these. Delicious pho and bahn mih at both locations. I visit Little Saigon more due to proximity but both are worthy of being called the best Vietnamese in the city.
4. Palermo Ristorante - A relative newcomer to the BR dining scene but one that's making a name for itself with fresh pasta and North Sicilian cuisine. The pasta carbonara I had there was excellent. Hard to find one that good outside of Italy.
3. Sushi Yama - BR has about 50 sushi restaurants but Yama always gets my business. In the 10+ times I've dined here in 2016, my meal has always been perfect. Fresh fish and the snowcrab apple salad may be my favorite starter at the moment.
2. Beausoleil - Encroaching on fine dining but just casual enough to where you can eat delicious food while wearing just about anything. One of the few restaurants in BR that reminds me of New Orleans: a changing, chef-created menu based on seasonal ingredients. And one of the few places you can get sweet breads.
1. City Pork Brasserie - My #1 for 2016. Each time I dined here in 2016 I left saying "why don't I eat here more?" From the house made charcuterie and cheeses to the creative entrées to the interesting and delicious specials (like a fried softshell crab grilled cheese), City Pork does everything right.

My list looks the same if you move city pork to 3 and the other two up one spot.

Your top 2 would definitely make my list, haven't been to 3-5... Gouter would make my top 5 for sure.
The Merchant would make my list as well.
If we're excluding anything fine dining, then I probably have The Chimes rounding my list out.
Curbside I'm excited about for a casual place, but I only went once in the short time in 2016 they were open.
ETA: And I still need to do more than brunch at Olive or Twist, but they deserve mention for the brunch alone.

Your top 3 are spot on. City Pork's charcuterie boards are legit and unique. I never have a bad experience there.
I have never tried Palermo. I'll make a point to stop by there.

3. Sushi Yama
Is under new management since Oy has left to supposedly start a restaurant on the Northshore.

I have never been to Gouter or The Merchant but after reviewing their menus they will both be the next two places I eat.
Thank you!
Thank you!

No problem... Gouter is probably about on par with Beausoleil in terms of price. The Merchant is definitely the cheaper of the two. The Merchant usually has a pretty solid draft beer selection as well.

I was coming to say this. They have a good draft beer selection, they had several of Parish's GR Day beers on draft when I went.

My personal #1 would be Maison Lacour, but since we're not including fine dining, my Top 5 would consist of these:
Thai Pepper
Dang's
9 Dragon Noodle House (I prefer it over Omi)
Umami (my new favorite for sushi over Sushi Yama)
Gino's
Honorable mention:
City Pork
Zorbas
Beausoleil
Parrains
Diguilios
Ninos
Delpit's Chicken Shack
La Morenita

Merchant
City Park
Bistro Byronz
Beausoleil
Are all in my top 5... I haven't been to most of the places listed so far so I need to expand where I eat.

Gino's and Zorba's are good calls. Nino's as well but that's bordering on fine dining.
I enjoyed Zoroona a lot as well.

I like all on the list but I am in Ninos more than any and there is a reason for that. I love the place.

Frozen mules are legit.

I really like Nino's as well. The only reason I don't go more often is because all of his pasta preparations are revealed on their website, and are pretty easy to replicate at home.

Agree. Prob one of the most consistently disappointing places I've been this year. it's one of those places that sounds pretty good, then you eat there and it's just not executed properly. Wish this wasn't the case, but sorry.
