Going to Austin and trying to visit a few BBQ joints while we are there. It’s the week of Franklins annual weekly vacation so that’s not an option. I’ve heard great things of Terry Blacks but wanted to get other options. Thanks for the help.

La Barbacue was pretty awesome when I went. Valentina’s does a Tex Mex BBQ thing that looks awesome but I never got around to trying it.

They do some neat stuff. I’ve never been a Kerlin fan but I do like Micklewaith.

love the salt lick and been there many times
the family style menu is great and the setting is perfect

It’s not the best Austin area BBQ by any stretch but it makes me happy

Can vouch for LA and Terry Black's. Micklethwait's wasn't as good as those.

So many great places in Austin, outside of Franklin my favorites in no order are
Leroy and Lewis, Valentinas and Terry Black’s and I’ve been to a lot of them. Don’t go to The Salt Lick unless you want an underwhelming meal but a cool picture.

I was there this weekend. Please note that the wait times for the popular places are very long. Valentina's wait after ordering via the phone app (only way to order) was 2 hours and 36 minutes. That's what they call "immediate pickup". Call far in advance to make sure that you can pickup your order at a time that fits into your day. It looked and smelled great, though. We could not get food at Terry Blacks or La Barbecue in less than 2 hours, either. I assume other popular places are the same. Since it was 100 degrees outside, neither me nor my wife were interested in waiting up to two hours in the heat. I must be getting old.

All of the places at which we ate were outside of the city. Treaty Oak Distillery (great brisket) and Slab BBQ were very good. Switch BBQ was barely OK, nothing great.

Do yourself a favor and drive to Lockhart TX, about 35 Miles from Austin and check out the original Blacks BBQ and Smittys as well. You could also drive the extra 15mins and check Luling City Market.
Louie Muellers in Taylor is top notch too.

Those are all very good joints. Have eaten at them all.

But, IMO, Terry Black's and LA BBQ in Austin are both better. Micklethwait's not so much.

Besides the already mentioned Leroy & Lewis and La Barbecue, CM Smokehouse is next on my list when I’m in Austin hopefully next month. Interstellar, Distant Relatives, and JNL barbecue too. Valentina’s is closed this week I believe.
