I am about to pull the trigger on a fryer for the new outdoor kitchen at the hunting camp. At most, we have 12-15 people at a time (maybe 3-5 times a year that many).

I looked around on Craigslist and found some commercial quality used equipment in the $500-700 range. ($2000 to $3000 new). This unit is $264 brand new. Propane. Two baskets.

Anyone have any experience with Bayou Classic? Seems like all I would need for the size crowds we usually have. Thanks for your experience and input.

Never bought that one, but had the cast iron version before some SOB stole it. Was awesome.

Bayou Classics are okay. The R&V Works is better made although not stainless. I have used the Bayou Classic and ended up buying the R&V

Interesting. Had never heard of the R&V. Now I'm checking them out. Thanks.

I have one that's custom made by R&R Welding. You might consider getting the cart on wheels(yeah, mine is in a cart)It holds the propane tank and makes for easier moving around.
Not sure about the Bayou Classic but you'll love having a deep fryer like that!

R&V is 1000x better than the bayou classic and you can get them in larger sizes.

I have a 6.5 gallon and it is the smallest size that will do a turkey. They are loud as hell though, like a jet burner you would use for crawfish. That might be a consideration if it will be close to everyone. A commercial unit will be silent.

I was thinking the opposite...that one of these personal units would be quiet and the commercial stuff would be loud. That's the way it is with coolers and refrigerators/freezers. Good info, thanks.

No Frills Electric

Those are nice but take a ton of Oil... $$$$$$. This uses a gallon of oil and frys real good and is easy to clean.

I have the 4.5 gallon Bayou Classic and it has been great. Love that it is made of Stainless which makes it so much easier to clean. Seems to be really well made all the welds look solid. There is really not anything to go wrong with one short of a weld cracking.

The R&V is loud as hell. It has a tube that heats the grease, that tube is heated by shooting a flame from a jet burner through it. After i first light it, Ill have a foot of flame blowing through the exhaust stack.

A commercial unit, like below uses heats the oil wih long, low pressure burners. Nearly silent. Also, a commercial unit will have a thermostat to keep your temp perfect.

I have the R&V 4 gallon and we use the heck out of it. It hold the temp pretty good unless you are loading it with a lot of cold meat quickly.
Its pretty easy to light and I've never had a flame coming out the stack . It's absolutely perfect for frying fish and seafood.

You can get a cheap 35-40 lb fryer at ducotes for under 750 if you dont get a high end brand.

It will be quiet, keep your temp perfect all day, and can be put on wheels with a quick disconnect for the LP.

I can't imagine any other way. The thermostat alone is worth the $

They make a really nice heavy duty version of these at Angola. They are twin basket, 5 gal, v-bottom, and hold temps extremely well.

You can pick one up at the spring rodeo for between $250 and $300. Haggling will get you the best deal.

Very interesting. I've always wanted to take my kids to that. This might be my excuse.

I have an R&V and have used a Bayou Classic many times. You can't go wrong with either cooking wise. The Bayou Classics heats up faster, but I think the R&V holds heat better once it gets up to temp. And it is a good bit more sturdy than the Bayou Classics.

love that thing, ordering right now.

I just never have the need for a even a four gallon fryer. When I fry, even for a group of people, we are more hanging around and eating stuff as it comes out versus serving it up.

The few times I have fried for a bunch of folks I just get out a pot and my burner and do it that way.

I looked on the Angola Prison Industries web site, and they don't list a fryer. They do show bbq grills. So, I emailed them. And this is what I got back:

We do not sell fish fryers.

Thank you

I'll ask around. They have sold them in the past within the Arts and Crafts area of the rodeo. Not sure they are available any other time. The spring rodeos are coming up in April. I know people that work there, I'll get back to you on it.
