Ate at Mandina's tonight

It is the wife's birthday and we called around and found several local restaurants closed tonight. We tried Liuzza's, Venezia's and one other only to find they were not open, and this was only around 6 p.m.
Called Mandina's and they were open so we went there. Really not much of a crowd at all with only seven or so tables being occupied.
I got a bowl of turtle soup for me and oyster/artichoke for her to start and we split a seafood platter, and couldn't finish the platter.
It was huge with 2 large catfish filets fried, a dozen or so oysters, like numbers of shrimp and lots of fries. It was all hot and fried to perfection being nice and crispy with the cornmeal coating and the seafood cooked perfectly.
A couple cocktails accompanied the feast and we were done before the platter was finished.
It was nice to not have to cook tonight and a treat for both of us.

My uncle used to go all the time ... but I never made it

How is that possible??
First time I ate there was back in the mid 80's and a friend took me there after I had planed down a bunch of lumber for him in my shop. I can remember that meal of oyster dressing stuffed chicken breast, sweet potato and green beans that I had on a Tuesday night before dart league.
Imagine my surprise to see that very meal is still on the menu for their daily special on Tuesday.

Mandinas is classic New Orleans goodness. Always solid and huge portions

Not really sure - we went to Liuzza’s most often when we went out - which in all honesty wasn’t much

Mandina’s gets a bad rap here by folks. There are a number of dishes I love there. I’ve never understood the hate.

Mandina’s is fantastic. Old school NO neighborhood joint through and through. Great menu. NO classics like Trout Almadine and Italian classics. Classic neon light sign in the window. Waiters dressed nice (black pants, white shirt). A different Sunday dinner menu. They even have a parking lot, so that’s a huge bonus.
Mandina’s is one of the great NO restaurants. It’s not a foodie new school place. It’s an old New Orleans neighborhood restaurant that has kept their identity and stood the test of time.
For the record, I love Liuzza’s for the atmosphere, the frozen glasses, and the ice urinal. But the food is average and would never survive in another restaurant.
Mandina’s is one of the great NO restaurants. It’s not a foodie new school place. It’s an old New Orleans neighborhood restaurant that has kept their identity and stood the test of time.

When Katrina flooded it the one positive was it knocked the inch layer of dust off the waiters tuxedo uniforms.
I love the place.

The wife and I each got a bowl of soup----turtle for me and oyster/artichoke for her. They were good size bowls and both soups were well made and packed with flavor.
I hit my bowl of turtle soup with a shot of sherry and that added another level of flavor.

I agree. I remember when I was living in New Orleans, you could only get the seafood stuffed mushrooms on Saturdays.I don't think they're on the menu at all any longer. I loved going on Saturday afternoons especially during football season. The "regulars" were always there crowded around the bar. Lots of local New Orleans energy in the place.

I'm sort of kidding, but I do legitimately think Mandina's is one of the single worst popular restaurants in New Orleans. I do not get it at all and I have been there many many many times in my life.
No one under 50 should like the place. Its one of those perplexing mysteries to me.

Don’t understand your dislike. We eat there quite often and have never had a bad experience. The Creole Eggplant is out of this world. Seafood always perfectly fried, solid Veal Parm., great onion rings. What is it that you don’t like? My only complaint is they no longer have the cracker/Melba toast baskets
