In short, they say people would use whatever they had and now some people do it because they grew up with it.

This ought to be good. There's not normally alot of grey area when it comes to this topic. IMO tomatoes never go in a gumbo.

There is always some tomato in my gumbos simply because I grow my own okra and will smother down about 5 gallons of it during the summer months to put up in quart bags in the freezer for use in gumbos and some soups I make.
When I smother down the okra I always use canned diced tomatoes, onion, garlic and a few other dry seasonings to cook it down before bagging it up.

I’ve never put tomatoes in my gumbo, but if a gumbo was made the way I like it (thick, roux-heavy) I probably would hardly notice tomatoes. I have used them in chicken and andouille stews or sauce piquant, and those are basically made just like gumbo.

By the time my smothered okra cooks down even further in the gumbo, you wouldn't even know there was some tomato in the pot.
I make a pretty thick, dark gumbo since I've never been a fan of watery/soupy gumbo.
I fed close to 75-80 people my gumbo just a couple weeks ago and didn't have any complaints about it. Between the chicken/sausage/okra gumbo, rice and big container of my potato salad, it went away before the night was over.

I don't use tomatoes and see no point whatsoever in adding tomatoes (what do they add to a gumbo in terms of flavor?), but if someone wants to use it in their gumbo, go for it. Cook it the way you like it.
My issue with tomatoes in gumbo or jambalaya is why? What does it add to the dish? I hear all the time, people say they use Rotel because the chilies flavor it....well then add a can of chilies, why add tomatoes and chilies?

I don't use okra in gumbo, but I don't really see where a basket of fried okra is vile Or a pickled okra in a bloody mary.
