I make a damn good shrimp and okra gumbo.
Don't use okra or tomatoes in chicken and sausage gumbo.
Don't use either in stews.

Kin Gombo, changed to Gumbo is the African word for okra. Gumbo is okra.

Maybe in Africa. But here in Louisiana, okra is okra.

The reason some people put tomatoes in gumbo is because they don't know how to make gumbo. Simple as that. They may like the taste, but it isn't really gumbo. I had a secretary who put corn in her "gumbo." A Mississippi girl.

Tomatoes belong in seafood gumbo. Why? Because that is the way my grandmother made it and hers was the best.
No tomatoes in chicken and andouille gumbo.

I put a Tomatoe (diced) in just about everything I cook in a pot.
It’s part of my “trinity”
It cooks up and you don’t even know it’s there, but adds flavor and a smoothness of flavor.
And it’s good for you.
