Any good varieties in SELA that won’t be mistaken for something toxic? Chicken of the woods, morels, etc?

Friend,
Uncle brought me mushroom foraging when I was eight in City Park after a heavy rain. We found a few oyster and Chanterelles, which I recall being delightful. We did some more hunts on trips to eastern Tennessee, North Carolina, and Michigan, where we found more Morrells than we could handle so passed them along to other foragers who had not done so well. I would love to start or join a mushroom foraging club in New Orleans if anyone else is interested or knows of one.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

My brother had some chanterelles growing in his front yard. He brought them over last night and sautéed them with some onions and put that on a burger. It was delicious.

You can eat any mushroom.
Some only once!

When I was a kid, my grandfather used to forage for morels and oyster mushrooms (on birch trees, IIRC). I wish I'd liked mushrooms back then. Could've learned from him.

You've got chanterelles around.

Chantarelles grow near water oaks in the deciduous woods. Grow more under ivy or on a slight slope. Best picked after a rain.
look for the golden-orange shrooms, irregularly shaped with little "fingers" up top. May grow in a ring or in a pattern.

There are these skinny white ones that pop up in the yard every morning. Are they edible?

But make sure the ring on the stem is purple not white. Seriously.
ETA I filled up a trash bag in a field off GSRI about 30 years ago. Was literally wearing. Tie-dye and sandals. Didn't even cross my mind that I could get in trouble. Simpler times for little Billy.

There's a few good Facebook groups. I recently got in to it and have picked a few lbs of chanterelles. If you read up on them the mushrooms that could possibly be mistaken for them will make you sick to your stomach, not kill you. I was nervous eating them at first but if you know what you're looking for in regards to the wrinkles instead of gills, string cheese test, and apricot smell you are good to go.

Also use a crawfish sack to spread the seeds for the next guy

I've been twice this summer. We picked enough chanterelles to cover a picnic table. Chantrelles look very distinctive, and are delicious. With the extras, I made a duxelles and froze it for beef Wellington or to serve on toast corners.
We found them in hardwoods around St. Francisville, where we deer hunt.
