Trahan, a self-taught chef recently crowned King of Louisiana Seafood has been a part of several restaurants in South Louisiana, most recently with Blue Dog Cafe.

Probably should have left this part out.

Is that the place that had the huge pork chop lunch special?

I miss the rabbit stew and meatball stew. Was a great lunch spot for good downhome Acadiana style cooking.

According to this story from our friends at KATC TV3, Chef RyanTrahan plans to open a restaurant he describes as "an elegant, modern space", which will include a raw bar and a cocktail bar that will feature drinks "unlike any other in the city"

This place will be closed within a couple of months. They are going to fight for the hipster crowd that doesn't have any damn money and has several places fighting for their attention.

Eh, I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure what "unlike any other in the city" means though.

Hipsters open up places that don’t serve just fried seafood and gumbo

I don’t see why they are a negative

The downtown location definitely was and was always packed for lunch.

For some reason, they tried to go for the high end steak restaurant niche out in Broussard. They opened that up around the time the oil field went to shite and it ended up sinking them at both locations

Its not a negative, but hey rarely do well due to trying to cater to a very small market. At some point, they have to realize that Lafayette is full of baws that want to pound Mich Ultra and Crown Royal. They don't want a $12 "spin on a cocktail."

FTR: I hope this place does well. The idea of a raw bar downtown is exciting. I know Don's is there, but another option is nice.

Sounds like they are shooting for a downtown version of social. I hope they execute it better, and at a better price point.

I think places like Pamplona, Social, Pops, Central Pizza, Spoonbill fit the bill for the type of place youre talking about. They're all doing fairly well as far as I can tell

I find this crowd usually stays away from downtown though, they just want to take the ole lady to Texas Roadhouse, or Sushi Masa if they're really looking to ball out, then head home to Kaplan/Delcambre/Abbeville.

Downtown seems to be attracting more than just the hipsters, seems I'm seeing more and more families at Tulas, Pops, Central, Spoonbill, The Wurst etc. Dare I say these places are trending up, not down. The places that seem to be struggling are the places that try to open up where all the baw-popular restaurants are. Acme Taco, Sonnys Noodles, and a couple others were no match for Texas Roadhouse, Sushi Masa, Twin Peaks, etc.

ETA: There's a El Salvadorian placed that just opened next to Tulas, in the old Pho Tastic location that I haven't tried yet but the last few times I passed there was ZERO people inside while Central/Tula had people waiting outside. That can't be good.

Nah, B&C does fine, or appears to.

ETA: as stated there are other restaurants (Central, Social, Pamplona, Spoonbill, Tsunami, etc...) that have similarly priced cocktails that are still frequented. When I’m out to dinner with my friends who live in Lafayette, we’re typically getting cocktails, and I’m sure we aren’t the only ones.

Yep, many of these are my friends

Proper Lafayette doesn't have that many baws of that type.

I tired dish from there. It was good, but I'm not skipping those Tula margaritas for it.
