just got back…holy shite this place is unreal
they have 9 different small plates you can share with the table…you can get all 9 for freakin $21!! that is unreal for the quality of food. everything we had was amazing…the tabouli salad was the wife's favorite…agreed it was extremely fresh…the meshing of ingredients was brilliant here…my favorite was the lutenitsa which is shaya's mom's receipe…it's bulgarian puree of roasted pepper, eggplant, garlic and tomato…my wife and I both agreed the pita was the best we ever had…it appears the wood brick oven was for the pita only…what an investment that was…but pretty smart since a majority of his dishes go very well with pita bread…seeing as we live a stone's throw away from this place, we will certainly order out at least once a week here…so excited to have this one in the neighborhood
we had good service too. waitress appeared slightly nervous but she was knowledgeable about the menu and very courteous…Shaya stopped by the table to personally thank us for coming and introduce himself…he was making conversation at every table.
the specialty cocktail menu is still being worked on so we weren't able to try any of those…they had 2 craft beers a good stout and little sumpin sumpin…that's all I need to enjoy a meal like that…here's a pic of our small plates.
oh yah forgot to add the bobka dessert was phenonmal as well

One of my favorite restaurants is Israeli. Zahav in Philadelphia. It's incredible. Glad we finally have something that seems similar.
Is most everything cooked in a wood burning oven?

The article says only the pita bread now in the oven but shortly most of his entrees. I love his food and have been waiting on this one. I will be there next week.

I might see you there. Very excited about this option.

We went last night around 8pm after watching some of Krewe d' etat. Our experience was essentially the same.
We had the lutenitsa, ikra (paddlefish caviar spread) and roasted beets. We also went for the eggplant hummus and lamb kabob. Everything was topnotch.
Our server was actually knowledgeable and very cool. Shaya came by and sat down for a minute or two and talked. Very personable guy. Said he was sincere about wanting to be part of the neighborhood.
Okay, what's the over under on when the first posters chime in with "overrated"? And who's the most likely candidate?

I ran into him a couple weeks ago while walking a dog and got the same vibe. Can't wait to get over there. Might try today.

i thought Shaya was great in Fury with Brad Pitt

I thought he was terrible. Didn't like him in the Transformers shite either. Good thing he's diversifying his assets and getting into the restaurant business with John Besh. His career in Hollyweird is toast.

i agree with you on transformers. marky mark is such an improvement. i guess he pissed everyone off in hollywood so hollywood south is the only place that would take him. i thought he was pretty genuine in fury. is Pitt part owner with Besh and Shaya?

I saw that deal for $21, that would be great to split among the table. I also liked the variety of the hummus.
It looks really good, I'll try and stop by closer to the end of the month.

It'll be great when the menu expands with more items from the wood fired oven.

That is a deal. He's going to be slammed for as long as he wants. Guy is great and this is just what ya'll needed down there. I'll say it will make me drive in for it.
However I'll wait until after carnival so I'm heading to Zorbas tonight for some Greek food and some Greek wine.
