Aldi seafood hack: cheap food for a change of pace from the high price threads

Lots of posts complaining about high prices (totally warranted), but I have found a hack that helps.
I go out for lunch early once every couple of weeks and grab Aldi's 50% off fish. You need to go between an hour or 2 hours after they open; that gives them time to do the daily markdowns but usually too soon for them to get grabbed up. I go in the middle of the week and 90% of the time I am able to grab some. I got 6 packs of Salmon and Steelhead today. It comes vacuum-packed, so it freezes well.
So 2 people a meal breaks down like this from today:
1.05 lbs of Mediterranean herb Salmon $5.77
one of the small bags of flavored rice $.99
bag of frozen steam-in-bag veggie medley $.99
Total for 2 people $7.75 so $3.88 per person
My Aldi also has a pound of THICK asparagus* for $2.69, so you could sub 4oz portions for the veggies and still be under $4.25 per person.
Some of today's haul:
For anyone who has not had steelhead trout it is very similar to salmon but not quite as "fishy" and the oils aren't quite as healthy as salmon oils but still better than most proteins
* I said thick asparagus because most of our "regular" grocery stores have the thin as green beans stuff, which does not handle the heat of baking or grilling well

It is the day before the sale-by date. We will eat one pack tonight and freeze the rest. It is vacuum-sealed, and we can't tell the difference between ones with 3 days left and the ones with 1 day left. If we could I wouldn't do it.

Your "hack" is to buy marked-down old seafood?

New hack: Jump in the dumpster behind the store. Get all the goodies you can get.

I always peruse the meat section at Albertson's to see what's marked down that day. I had to get some prescriptions for my son at lunch today, and left with 4 large chicken breasts and 2 1.5lb prime sirloins, all marked 50% off.
A lot of times, what's on sale will dictate what's for dinner that night, and whatever we don't eat gets vacuum sealed and frozen.

I'm always looking for the markdown items at Kroger. Nothing wrong with it.

I draw the line at seafood. It is simply not work the risk of a full day or more of toilet time for my arse and face.

You should never buy any meat that’s comes already in a marinade. More often than not, that is somebody trying to hide stinky or discolored meat.

This is true in the same way you should never buy the fish specials at a restaurant. FWIW the med salmon in the picture is not a marinade, just dry spices with the bottom and cut side still exposed.

So the hack is to buy the stuff that's 1/2 off?
Fascinating

The hack is when to go.

I do the same but at the new Rouses in Central. Get there before 8 on Friday or Saturday and find some good deals. Also will usually buy whetever they have on special that week.

Look at the date on the Salmon, tomorrow. When they reduce meat & seafood it's usually a day before the sell by date

I wonder where the nation of Chile gets its Atlantic Salmon to sell Americans.

My friend runs her home catering business in Houston with Aldi specials, she is very popular, nobody has complained yet.

Definitely a solid hack
We always buy meat from our local butcher shop's discount freezer. 40% off.

I was scared to try Aldi’s two pack of tuna steaks they sell for $5. But my wife’s sister (no pic) swore by them so we picked them up last week. All we had to do was lightly heat them up in a pan and serve- they are really good and the perfect amount (prolly too small for you ozympic types). In the weekly rotation now.

From their farm pens. Atlantic Salmon is a species, not an indication of where it lives.
