Wife and I are expecting our first child this winter. I thought it would be a pretty cool idea to purchase a bottle of alcohol that could be shared on the child's 21st birthday. I've been told that Blanton's is a good choice to go with and there is a site that releases their dump dates to help track and exchange information on specific dates.

Do you baws have any other suggestions?

I'm a wine collector and did this with my 2. Thankfully both of mine were born in top tier Bordeaux vintages and I bought each a case of first growths. Also bought them some Port & Sauternes; both of which can age longer than them.

My thought was, if they don't want the wine they can sell it and have a nice little stash of cash to do something with.

Its a great idea; I just think it's more meaningful if the booze is the same age as them.

i don't really see the point in doing liquor cause it will just be old. Do something that is going to change remarkably over the aging

I would do some wine or champagne

Old Forester 1920 >>>>>> Blanton's

The bottle isn't as cool but it's cheaper and better.

Grab a 21yo scotch that's bottled this year. Then you both can share a 21yo scotch on his/her 21st birthday. Here is a list of some great 21yo scotches that don't break the bank.

Glenfarclas 21
Arran 21
Glenallachie 21
Glengoyne 21
Glen Scotia 21
Glendronach 21

Wouldn't it be a 42-year-old scotch by then?

This is a valid point that I considered as well.

The one possible caveat, however, would be to say that unless you can reasonably assure 21 years of basically proper climate control for the wine, it may be just as likely to turn to shite as it will "change remarkably" for the good.

true which is why changed my mind about doing this for baby girl first birthday coming up. It basically requires a wine fridge

Good high ABV beer could work out well too.

i think if you are going to do it, I think it is worth risk vs just having an old bottle that is more or less the same thing you can buy in a store.

I have one of the original Glenmorangie 12 yo Nectar D' Or bottlings that I will saver for that. Purchased it for $22. I has gone up as high as $90 locally and is now about $60.

Who knows if they will even like drinking scotch, but we will try it anyway.

no, the aging process stops after it's bottled. Wine will continue to mature.

I'd find a BTAC, Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

Ideally, cheaper than Blanton's. It can be around the $150-$200 range at the most
