re: 9 mistakes you make at an Indian Restaurant

The article is written in the style of "you are doing it wrong", which is common on the internet these days. It's applied to everything from making toast to mowing the lawn, and it's a semi-serious tongue-in-cheek attention grabber.
The Thrillist, where this was published, often uses that style. I like their food service stories that are often titled something like: "Douchiest Restaurant Customers Ever" or "Stories of Awful Fast Food Workers."
Some folks apparently don't care for that style of writing.

I liked the article. But I've worried when I go to Indian restaurants I was doing trashy things that were causing the servers to roll their eyes at me, like eating condiments straight with a fork or getting horrible food combinations (kind of like eating fried chicken, with sides of meatloaf and pulled pork. Or putting mashed potatoes and french fries on the same plate). I worry about doing similar things at any restaurant where I'm not super familiar with the cuisine. There's nothing wrong with telling someone who is interested "Psst, you're doing this wrong."

It's become a little tiresome, although I generally find it more palatable in "less serious" types of pieces such as the OP. Matt Taibbi is an example of someone that takes it to the extreme. My eyes roll continuously whenever I read anything that he has written.

Indian food is the best food in the world

I find it a little silly that anyone would be self conscious enough to care what the waiter thinks when enjoying a meal. Only thing the waiter should be doing is making sure my drink is full, delivering me my food, and engaging in fun banter in regards to how my meal is going and other simple topics while I enjoy my food or company. Would be a silly move for a waiter, who depends on your tip, to give off the slightest vibe of looking down on someone enjoying their meal.

And I agree. There is nothing wrong with a waiter coming over and giving a recommendation that they enjoy eating this chutney with that dish, or even giving a suggestion how to enjoy the meal when serving it. There is something wrong with a waiter being a snobbish douche and saying "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG BECAUSE THIS IS HOW I ENJOY IT!!!"

I'm fine with that style of writing when it applies to tongue-in-cheek topics, such as "Douchiest Restaurant Customers Ever" or "Stories of Awful Fast Food Workers."
Not on articles introducing people to a new or foreign cuisine. The article does more harm than good, IMO.

Gayest article I've read in awhile

The content is fine, the tone is annoying.

Somehow I'm only guilty of using the naan to scoop up chutney. I also don't each with my hands much when there but most of the things are stews or sauces over rice so I'm not sure what to do with that really.
Only ordering chicken tikka masala is a good one. You should definitely branch out and try some other things. At least order the tikka masala and something new along with it.

I do the same thing with the chutney, wife and I both do. Taj Mahal has a container of like 6 different ones we dip with the bread. We look forward to it every time we go there or get takeout.
Everyone should try chicken/lamb vindaloo at least once.

Pretentious shite like this is why the general public despises foodies

Do I still have to wipe my arse with my hands? Or just pretend like I do to appease pretentious people?

arse to IPA ratio needs to be normalized.

That article reads as though a pretentious arse wrote it.

Great point btw. It is sensational writing but it's good to mix it up.

my better half absolutely despises Indian food, to spicy for her. Me on the other hand loves the stuff. What is something she may like that not to spicy. It would be my dream if I could get her to goto the place Indian Restaurant down the street from us.

I'd say butter chicken might win her over.

Try chicken korma (chicken in creamy sauce) and mattar paneer (paneer served in creamy sauce with peas). They are both pretty mild but just tell the server you want it mild to reaffirm.
